SECTION -A
1. Which important property did Mendeleev use to classify the elements in his periodic table and did he stick to that?
2. Explain the theoretical justification of Modern Periodic Law ?
3. Write the atomic number of the element in the element in the third period and seventeenth group of the periodic
table?
4. Give the name and atomic number of the inert gas atom in which the total number of d-electrons is equal to the
difference in numbers of total p- and s-electrons.
5. What is the basic difference between the terms electron gain enthalpy and electro negativity?
SECTION -B
6. What is diagonal relationship? Explain with two examples.
7. The elements Z = 117 and Z = 120 have not yet been discovered. In which family/group would you place these
elements and also give the electronic configuration in each case.
8. Explain the cause of periodicity in properties of elements taking alkali metals and halogens as examples.
9. How would you justify the presence of 18 elements in the 5th period of the periodic Table?
10. Write two characteristics each of s-, p- and d- block elements.
SECTION -C
11. Arrange the elements of second period in order of their increasing second ionization enthalpies.
12. p- Block elements form acidic, basic and amphoteric oxides. Explain each property by giving two examples and
also write the reactions of these oxides with water.
13. (a) How do atomic radii very in a period and in a group? How do you explain the variation?
(b) What are the various factors due to which the ionization enthalpy of the main group elements tends to decrease
down the group?
14. (a) Nitrogen has positive electron gain enthalpy whereas oxygen has negative, However, oxygen has lower
ionization enthalpy than nitrogen. Explain.
(b) Assign the position of the element having outer electronic configuration,
(i) n s2np4 for n = 3
(ii) (n-1) d2 ns2 for n = 4 and
(iii) (n – 2) f7 (n – 1) d1 ns2 for n = 6 in the periodic table.
15. (a) First ionization enthalpy of Be is higher than that of B and N is higher than of O. Explain.
(b) Consider the following species. N3-, O2-, F-, Na+, Mg2+ and Al3+.
(i) What is common in them?
(ii) Arrange them is order of increasing ionic radii?
