SUBJECT PRESENTATON
This subjet helps students improve their learning of the English Language, as well as to adquire the necessary competences to reach level B1 of the
Common European Framework for Languages. In order to reach such level, students practice the four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) to
increase his/her communicative competence as well as a deeper study into the linguistic system (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and functions) through
different tasks.
The teaching and the learning activities will be focused on the improvement of the students’ use of the language as a social and academic means. Therefore,
the constant use and practice of the language in classes is of primary importance. During the course, the teacher will promote the increase of responsibility
attitudes with their own learning, learn to learn strategies and become a more independent student.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the course the student will be able to communicate with others with a reasonable fluency in oral and written situations, make
brief presentations about topics with enough clarity and reasonable precision. Besides, he/she will be able to write, simple, short and coherent
reports about different academic and social topics of interest. He will be able to understand the content of the information in most standard
language recorded material. He will also be able to search for different texts to find the required information.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The student will:
 Develop pretty good arguments that can be understood without difficulty most of the time.
 Offer brief well taught explanations of opinions, plans and actions.
 Write simple and detailed descriptions about a series of everyday situations.
 Summarize, communicate and offer his/her opinion with certainty about concrete facts related to everyday matters.
 Understand the main ideas of a clear discourse and in standard language about habitual topics related to a job, school, leisure time
including brief narratives.
 Understand simple technical information, such as functioning instructions of frecuently used devices and will be able to follow detailed
instructions.
 Find, understand and recognize relevant information in written common materials, such as letters, catalogues and brief oficial document

METHODOLOGY:

The teacher should be proficient in the use of the language and know about English teaching methodology and technology in the language teaching. She
should also be involved in a permanent reflexive process about the bases of her practice in order to identify and solve problems. As part of her commitment as
a teacher, she will promote a kind of learning in which empathy, responsibility and motivation are included and respect and self-steem are promoted in the
students too. With the purpose of promoting an integral kind of learning, the teacher will help students to learn to learn.

English will be used as a means of communication and teaching and learning of contents.

Promote the use of English as a means of communicartion inside and outside the class.

The teacher must interact with the students in English and promote the use of the following languag functions.
 Greeting people and responding to greetings
 Asking for repetition and clarification
 Asking for and giving the spelling and meaning of words
 Expressing and responding to thanks
 Making and responding to apologies and excuses

The teacher must implement task based activities related to real life and not only as a language system. Practices should be based on the knowledge of ddiscourse,
lexico-grammatical features, ssemantic & pragmatic meanings, ssentences & utterances, ffunctions, cohesion and coherence and features of spoken discourse.
Consequently, it is necessary to practice with communicative meaningful activities through individual, pair and group activities in which an an intelligible pronunciation
(sentence stress, intonation, pitch, etc.) is promoted. Besides, work on the writting skill should be fostered. Different instruments for learning must be used such as the
monolingual dictionary and technology such as internet.

Extensive reading
The students will read two books of intermediate-advanced level either from the library or any internet short story. During the first partial, a report
has to be given about what he/she has read. During the second partial period, a complete book must have been read and a book review has to
be written. During the third partial period, another review has to be written about the other book.

Workbook

Students will answer the workbook every unit. The workbook has the key to the exercises. So they have to check their answers and reflect
on their achievement. Every unit the students will hand in as part of their homework the unit answered and an achievement report in which they
answer the following questions:

What I learned from the unit / What I had problems at / what I will do to improve them (report on the use of strategies)
These two kinds of homework as well as other supporting material will be considered as homework.

Portfolio

A condition to take each partial exam is that students form a portfolio progressively. It has to be handed in on the day each partial period exam is
presented. If the student do not have it, they will not be able to take the exam. The following are the parts of the portfolio:

1. A front page which includes: Name of the university, the name of the academic division (DAEA), language major and subject name; then the name of the
subject and the
student’s name.

2. The subject’s framework


3. An introduction where the activities that were done during the units are mentioned and the purpose of the activities according to the subject’s syllabus.
4. All the activities should be chronologically ordered.(workbooks units, writings, extra exercises, etc). Include a vocabulary section with definitions and
pictures of the new vocabulary).
5. A conclusion of the partial period. Use the information from the report from each unit and report what you actually did to improve in the partial period.

Every partial period evaluation, there will be part of a mock exam for the PET. The results of the placement exam, as well as the pets and the
partial exams have the purpose of letting the students know what they are responsible of improving at.

Evaluation criteria for the oral exam:
100% – 95% = 10 69% -- 60% = 5 comprehension, fluency, grammar,
94% – 85% = 9 59% -- 50% = 4 vocabulary and pronunciation.
84% -- 78% = 8 49% -- 39% = 3
77% -- 74% = 7 38% -- 28% = 2 Evaluation criteria for the written
73% -- 70% = 6 27% -- 10% = 1 exam: Extension, cohesion and
9% -- 0% = 0 coherence ( use of language and lexis)

 Attendance and achievement should be of at least 80% at the end of the semester in order not to take the final exam (not 7.5).
 Less than 80% of attendance students have to take the final exam. Students with less than 60% of attendance will automatically take
extraordinary exam.
 Absences are accepted only when they have been approved by the school administration or with a doctor’s prescription.

THE STUDENTS HAVE TO PASS THE ORAL AND WRITTEN EXAM IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE.

 Students have to pass the oral exam and will be exempted from the final test if they have passed the oral and written exams.

 The final exam will be oral and written and if any of them is failed, the student will fail the semester.

 The oral exam will be based on micro and macro skills and the tasks practiced in the period.

 The evaluation of listening skill should take into account the micro and macro skills as well as the tasks practiced in the class.

 The different kinds of genres practiced in the class, in which the micro and macro skills have been practiced, are included.
