HN7740 Fallback Update Program

Version 5.8.0.5
If you are reading this you have successfully unzipped the files necessary to
update a HN7740. The directory in which the files were unzipped will be the
default directory for the operations that follow.

The intent of this fallback updater is to convert the version of the HN7740
fallback image to 5.8.0.5. The intent of this utility is to update the fallback
image on units that are already manufactured.

The fallback updater is primarily intended for use in the field at installation
time. The fallback updater swaps only a small number of files in the flash file
system of the unit. It is robust and safe to use.

(The corresponding PID updater burns the entire 16 Mbyte image of the flash device,
but if used incorrectly can easily cause the unit to become inoperable. Thus PID
updater is reserved for internal HNS use only.)

New in this update script

• Check for proper HW platform before script is executed.

• 5.8.0.5 image tail is tagged with “PID”. This image will be used for
Fallback over the air (FOA) operation.
• Updates fallback.bin to release 5.8.0.5 built(Oct 06 2008, 10:11:23)
• Installs a new Satellite Based Commissioning configuration file “sbc.cfg”
(Version=NAD080808).

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

You can set up any number of stations to do this repair. Each station must
have:

• Windows PC. For this operation Windows NT is recommended.

• Ethernet hub

• Ethernet cables. PC<-->hub, target<-->hub.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

• The files in this unzip directory.

PROCEDURE TO SET UP ONE REPAIR STATION

STEP 1. Unzip the HN7740_FU_5.8.0.5 updater.

STEP 2. Configure your PC LAN port. From the windows START button in the lower left hand corner
of your computer screen select Settings  Control Panel  Network. You should see a screen
similar to the first panel in figure 1. Select the Protocols tab. For the TCP/IP Protocol, select
Properties. Select “Specify an IP address.” Enter the following:
IP Address 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

(Windows NT example shown, Windows 95, 98, & ME may differ somewhat)

PROCEDURE TO REPAIR ONE TARGET

Repeat this procedure for each target to be repaired:

• Connect the PC and HX100 via the LAN.
• Open the Windows Explorer and navigate to the default directory
where the files were unzipped.
• Click on Direcway_updater.exe and type in the IP address of the
HX100 and then press ok.

Results

The following messages will be generated if the fallback update operation is

successful.

STEP 1

User Input: Type in the IP address of the HN7740 and press OK.
STEP 2

User Input: None

STEP 3

User Input: None

STEP 4
User Input: None

After the above operation is completed, the unit would be rebooted and the user
interface would automatically exit. After the unit boots up, verify that the
banner date of the software is correct.
DIAGNOSTICS:

• Check the LAN connectivity if the user interface displays any of the
messages shown below.

The LAN connectivity can be verified by using the command “ping <IP address of
the HN7740>” from a DOS prompt window on the PC. If the ping is unsuccessful:
• Verify that the cable connecting the HN7740 to the PC is properly plugged
in.
• Verify that the PC has the IP address 192.168.0.2.

After the connectivity has been successfully established, the HN7740 should be
power cycled and the DirecWay Updater program should be restarted. You may also
need to manually terminate the DirecWay Updater user interface (Refer the
section - known issues).

KNOWN ISSUES:

• If the program does not execute completely, the DirecWay Updater

user interface can sometimes stop responding to operator commands.
Therefore, it would not be possible to terminate the program using the
cancel button on the user interface. The operator would either need to
reboot the PC or kill the DirecWay installer task from the task manager.
The task manager can be opened by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL once.
