Teacher’s Remark:
INTRODUCTION

An Operating System is a program that acts as an Intermediately between the user of a

computer and the computer hardware. The purpose of an operating system is to provide an
environment in which a user can execute programs in a convenient and efficient manner.
LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM
LINUX is modern , free operating system based on UNIX standards. It has been designed to
run efficiently and reliably on common PC hardware, it run also on a variety of other
platforms. Linux is probably the best-known example of “open-source” software, programs
for which the source code is freely available on the Internet. Open-source software is free in
the sense that it can be obtained without payment, and it is free in the sense that users are
allowed to modify it, but it is not free in the sense that anyone can do whatever they want
with it Linux can be controlled by one or more of a text-based command line interface (CLI),
GUI, or through controls on the device itself (like on embedded machines). Separate projects
that interface with the kernel (it is the core component of Operating System, interacts
directly with hardware) provide much of the system's higher-level functionality.

A Linux distribution, commonly called a “distro”, is a project that manages a remote collection
of Linux-based software, and facilitates installation of a Linux OS. Most Linux distros support
dozens of programming languages. The most common collection of utilities for building both
Linux applications and OS programs is found within the GNU toolchain, which includes the
GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) and the GNU build system. GCC provides compilers for
Ada, C, C++, Java, and Fortran.

Why LINUX

 Runs on multiple hardware platforms

 Users like its speed and stability
 No requirement for latest hardware.
 Licensed under GPL
 Its free.
 Multi-user, Multiprocessing, Multitasking, Multithreading

Advantages of LINUX
 Linux systems are extremely stable.
 Linux is Free.
 No threat of viruses.
 Linux comes with most of the required software pre-installed.
 Linux never gets slow.
 Linux does not need defragmentation.
