Improvement being the Of'der of the day, we have at last s ucceeded in perfec ting a built -up col-

in the join ts. For some time past various manufacturers have bee n t urning out what th ey w ere
pleased to term" lock jomt" column s, which consisted of tong ued and grooved (or simi larly w o rked)
staves, glued together. A great many of these so-called lock joint column s h ave split and ope ned
up for the reason that the wood, being exposed to dampness, nat u rall y s we ll s, and in so doing
( th <: lock joint running WITH the gra1::1) would split and open the jomt. Man y unfort unat e experi e nces
with columns of thic; character :>rought us to a reali zation of the fact that w hat a colu m n required
was STREN GT H IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION' or across the grain of the wood. Dow el con struc -
tion is now employed by all up -to-date manufacturers of doors, turniture, etc., and so we fi gured that
it would certainly be successf'..11 in column building; hence the "Pease Dowel J o int Colo n ial

No. 10 Screen from the Inside. No. 10 Screen from the Outside.
This window screen, No. 10, designates our very highest grade of work
and indicates a type of frame in which the inner edges are beautifully moulded
or carved. The frames are Ys inch thick and slide up and down on oiled hard-
wooa guides, reaching to the top of the window. The guides are bored to
prevent splitting in nailing to the window stops. The screen is held in place
bv brass-plated, flat, llteel springs in the groove a t th e edge. Pus hing the
s~reen to one side as shown in the sectional cut b elow, it is easily removed
from the guide strips. The springs also hold the screen at any d esired eleva-
tion. Hand holes are cut in the frames (metal li fts work loose ). Each screen
has a brass disc bearing its number in black, and duplicate is fu rnish ed for the
window sill. The moulding covering the wire cloth is usually put on the Screen Doo r No. I4, Scre e n Door No. 1 11.

STEEL C E I LINGS.
Economical Ornamental Dust Proof Fire Proof
Sanitary Permanent Moist ure Pr 6of Vermin Proof
We are equipped to make prompt shipments to all pa rts of the Civilized Globe.
The Pease Perfect Steel Ceilings are made of standard gauge soft steel sh eets, shipping weight about 70 lbs. per
hu ndred square feet.
Their durability has never been questioned, and as to ordinary wear and tear will last a lifetime. T hey are particularly
adapted for use in public buildings, churches, schools, stores, theaters, and are being installed in private dwellings, owing to their
cleanliness and adaptability Of ornamentation.
Patterns here shown a re suitable for th e largest and smallest room, and are all n ew and original.
We claim for our ceilings elegance of design, variety of combination an d simplicity of application. Being incombustible
and almost air tight, they protect flo ors and woodwork in case of fir e, and have prevented the spread of flam es and saved build-
ings from total destruction. Being waterproof, a valuable feature in favor of steel ceilings, th ey can not be injured by water in
case of fire or by leaks of roofs or pipe.
They are light in weight, thus reducing the strain on trusses or joists to a minimum. T hey do not crack or fail like plas-
ter, or dry out and shrink like wood. They do not hold disease germs or vermin and can be easily cleaned with sponge and water.
We show <?nly a few of the many designs that can be made up of the various panels, borders, etc., but will be pleased to submit
designs and estimates any time.
In asking for estimates kindly send d~agram of room or place to be covered, showing all offsets, chimneys, etc. , with dimen-
sions; also the distance between the highest door or window and ce ilin~s; also distance from fl oor to ceiling as well as location of
any exposed beams, with sizes and location of gas or electric light. Upon receipt of same, we will submit without cost to you a
detail drawing and BEST LUMP PRICE FOR MATERIAL DELIVERED TO Y O U R N E AR EST RA I LR OAD STA-
TION. '
Our prices always include nails for putting up the metal, also wood brackets for cornice, but not furring strips, as very often
the ceiling to be covered is wood, in which case furring is not needed. Our price for furring strips is 50 cents per square extra.
Any further information cheerfully furnished upon application.

VERY liberal percentage of our rough lumber comes from the South.
A .\ great many of the best mills are located on the l\1ississippi ri,·cr
and its tributaries, and by having our CASII llUYEH~ on the spot
AT TIIE RIGHT Tl.ME Wt are able to make favorable tradea for our
enormous requirements of the various southern woods, such as CY-
PRESS, YELLOW PINF, GUl\I (sometimes called oatin walnut), POP·
L~\R, OAK, E'l'C., which are brought to Cincinnati on
than carload lots which we usually ship d1rect from the mill.
DRESSED AND l\IANUF.ACTURED LUMBER, however, we
'lre able to sh ip from Cincinnati either in small lots or in
straight or mixed carloads, and in the latter event we can
include anything wanted in the way of frames, sash, doors,
blinds, mouldings, hardwar e, paints or any other of the thou·
sand and one items shown in this catalogue, thus making A TnEl\fENDOUS SAVING IN FREIGHT CHARGES; for, notwithstanding
tho very low freight rates existing on building material from this market in sma ll quantities, the carload rates are still lower, and when
you are needing as uueh as a minimum carload (24 ,000 lbs. )
every cent you save on the freight rate is multiplied by at least
two hundred and forty; therefore we say that a tremendous saving in
freight can be effected by ordering in
