Classroom Learning Profile

There are twenty nine students in Ms. Bae’s fifth-grade classroom. These students’

ages span from 10-11 years old. In terms of gender, the classroom has slightly more male

students than female students; there are 16 male students, and 13 female students. In terms of

race and ethnicity, 86 percent of students are Latino, 10 percent of students are African

American, and 3 percent of the class is Multi-racial. Over three quarters of the class are English

language learners of varying fluencies and come from homes where their families speak

Spanish. There are two students in the class who are Monolingual, Spanish speakers. Two

students in the class participate in a behavioral development program designed to keep them

accountable with specific behaviors, for example, avoiding angry outbursts and refusing to do

classwork.

With regards to family, Ms. Bae has mentioned that due to knowing Spanish, she is able

to create more trust with parents. There are not parent volunteers in the classroom. A

knowledge of Spanish and English Instruction to English Language Learners is very important

at César E. Chávez Elementary. “More than 90% of students at Chavez come from homes

where Spanish is the first language. Students are supported by a bilingual transition program

that teaches students in their native language while they learn English” (César E. Chávez

Elementary, 2018). Ms. Bae is an example of a one of the many teachers at the school who is

trying to involve parents in the Education of their children. “In a recent survey, 100% of parents

said they feel comfortable talking with their child’s teachers” (César E. Chávez Elementary,

2018).
