G Read about the British Petroleum oil disaster. Then circle T (true) or F (false). (5 POINTS)

The British Petroleum Oil Disaster

A large amount of pollution along seacoasts is caused by the mostly accidental spilling of petroleum from ships
and from oil-drilling operations. It is estimated that one ton of oil is spilled for every million tons shipped. When an
oil-drilling unit explodes in the ocean, spilling tons of crude oil that washes up on shore, it can mean
environmental disaster.

The worst oil spill in the U.S. occurred on April 20, 2010 when the oil-drilling unit Deepwater Horizon exploded in
the Gulf of Mexico off the coasts of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Within three months, the oil well
released approximately 4.9 million barrels of oil, about 53,000 barrels a day. Natural water currents and weather
conditions caused the spilled oil to spread out over 2,500 square miles (6,500 square kilometers), covering the
fragile shorelines in the area. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill had a disastrous effect on the rich wildlife of the Gulf
Coast. Many thousands of birds and sea animals, such as turtles, crabs, dolphins, and fish were killed.

The first efforts to close the oil well using remotely operated underwater vehicles failed. Another idea to cover the
oil well with a 125-ton dome also failed. Finally, on July 15, 2010, workers placed a cap on the well and secured it
with mud and cement. One lesson of the Deepwater Horizon disaster and other recent oil spills: The best way to
prevent such disasters is to change how oil companies drill for oil by using less risky methods.

1. T F Oil spills are usually accidental.

2. T F The Deepwater Horizon spilled nearly 5 million barrels of oil into the sea.
3. T F The oil spill had little effect on the wildlife in the Gulf Coast area.
4. T F The first efforts to close the oil well were successful.
5. T F Less-risky methods of drilling for oil would help to prevent oil-spill disasters.
