Section 0.2 Vocabulary Terms

FEDERALISM:​ This movement believed in creating a stronger national government


then the one outlined within the Articles of Confederation.

FEDERALISTS:​ They believed in a strong federal government; in regards to the


Constitution, they believe it was necessary that a strong federal government be
established due to the organization of the entire country. They also believed the system
of checks and balances would prevent on branch from growing too strong. (James
Madison, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay)

ANTI FEDERALIST: ​Anti-federalists believed in a strong state government. They also


believed that the Constitution would give too much power to the president and the
legislative with the rights of pardon and necessary and proper clause. They also wanted
a Bill of Rights.(Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams)

THE GREAT COMPROMISE:​ Proposed by Roger Sherman and also known as the
Connecticut Plan, settled the difference between the Virginia and the New Jersey Plan
by creating a bicameral, or two house, legislature that allowed for both large and small
states to be represented.
