Call for Indigenous Visual Presence on Ryerson Campus

Scope
The selected artist will design and create an entrance for Saagajiwe, a transdisciplinary
Indigenous Centre for research and creation whose mission is to facilitate the dissemination
of Indigenous thought and ways of knowing and doing at Ryerson University. Saagajiwe is
located in the Rogers Communication Centre.

Mandatory Requirements
1. The emerging artist must self-identify as Indigenous
2. The artist must submit all required materials by Oct. 31, 2018
3. The project must be complete for Dec. 15 , 2018

Artistic Guidelines
Saagajiwe is excited to see what unique approach each artist will take to the design, which will
1. Incorporate the title of the centre, “Saagajiwe” as well as hint at its meaning -- the
first ray of light.
2. Create an Indigenous visual presence and highlight the presence of Saagajiwe in the
building
3. Intrigue students to want to investigate Saagajiwe

Budget
The total budget for the project is $15,000. This includes the artist’s fees, materials, fabrication,
delivery, contingency and any/ all costs related to the work.

Timeline
Oct. 1 Call sent out to artists
Oct. 10 – 12 Scheduled visits to view site and meet with Saagajiwe team
Oct. 31 Submissions due
Nov. 2 – 10 Submission review
Nov. 15 Selection of artist announced
Nov. 19 – Nov. 30 Design/Creation
Dec. 15 All work is complete

● It is the responsibility of the artist to coordinate all aspects of design, fabrication, delivery
and instructions for installation.
● Submissions from individual artists only will be accepted.
