Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

To cater this lesson to all students, I will make sure that all students have headphones provided in the computer.
The video will also be available in other languages for EL students. This will also allow parents of EL students who do
not speak English to review the content learned in class. In order to ensure that students truly grasp the concept, I will
make sure to rewind the video and go over misunderstood concepts as many times as necessary.
Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPop video will introduce a unit on Jim Crow Laws. The teacher will ask the class what previous
knowledge the class has on segregation, if any, to create a class discussion on their predictions about what they think
Jim Crow Laws are about. After the class creates their predictions, the teacher will play the BrainPop video. After the
video, students will complete a mini quiz on the BrainPop website.
The mini quiz will serve as a formative assessment to see whether or not the students are grasping the concept of
Jim Crow Laws. Students will also partner up with a student at their table to discuss the ideas and facts discussed in
the video. They will be required to share 2 ideas that stood out to them, and 1 question they still have. After having a
discussion with a partner, the class will regroup and go over their thoughts/questions as a class.
Reflective Practice:
To dive deeper into this lesson, students will be assigned into groups of 3-4 students to create a group project.
This can be the creation of a poster, PowerPoint, Prezi, etc. that includes research the students will find via the
internet, media center books, prior knowledge, and classroom books to inform the class on what Jim Crow Laws were,
how they effected daily life in the United States, and how they were declared illegal. The group will present to the
class, and each group will have to answer any questions their fellow students/teacher may have.
