(EC-1 Regular)

Course No. : BITS ZC481

Course Title : COMPUTER NETWORKS
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 40% No. of Pages =1
Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 5
Date of Exam : 06/02/2010 (FN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Mobile phones and computers of any kind should not be used inside the examination hall.
4. Use of any unfair means will result in severe disciplinary action.

Q.1 (a). Sketch the bit stream 0011101using NRZ-I and AMI.
Q.1 (b). Explain how AMI encoding can detect a single bit error
Q.1 (c). A computer monitor has resolution of 1300 by 1000 pixel. Here each pixel
uses 1024 colour and the screen is renewed 30 times per second. How many
bits need to transmit per second to transmit complete content of the screen in
real time? [8]

Q.2. A CRC method uses the divisor 10100111 for getting redundant bits for a data
stream of 101011110101.
2.1. What is the maximum size of burst error it can detect, that can affect an odd
number of bits?
2.2. What is the maximum size of burst error it can detect, that can affect an
even number if bits? [8]

Q.3. A corporation has a medium with a 2-MHZ bandwidth (low pass). The corporation
needs to create 10 separate independent channels each capable of sending at least
10 Mbps. The company has decided to use QAM technology. What is the
minimum number of bits per baud for each channel? What is the number of points
in constellation diagram for each channel? Let d = 0. [8]

Q.4. Four channels, two channels with a bit rate of 200 kbps and other two with a bit
rate of 150 kbps, are to be multiplexed using multiple slots TDM with no
synchronization bits. Answer the following questions:
4.1. What is the size of a frame in bits?
4.2. What is the frame rate?
4.3. What is the duration of a frame?
4.4. What is the data rate? [8]

Q.5. We need a three-stage space-division switch with N =100. We use 10 crossbars at

the first and third stages and 4 crossbars at the middle stage.
5.1. Draw the configuration diagram.
5.2. Calculate the total number of cross points.
5.3. Find the possible number of simultaneous connections.
5.4. Find the possible number of simultaneous connections if we use one single
crossbar (100 x 100).
5.5. Find the blocking factor, the ratio of the number of connections in c and in
d. [8]
