PARENT LETTER
The South-Western City School District is pleased to offer our students access to the district
computer network for electronic mail and the Internet. To gain access to email and the Internet, all
students under the age of 18 must obtain parental permission and must sign and return this form to the
Library/Media Specialist. Students 18 and over may sign their own forms.
Access to email and the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases,
and bulletin boards while exchanging messages with Internet users throughout the world. Families should
be warned that some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory,
inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people. While our intent is to make Internet access available to
further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. We
believe the benefits to students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and
opportunities for collaboration, exceed any disadvantages. Parents and guardians of minors are ultimately
responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their children should follow when using media and
information sources. The South-Western City School District supports and respects each family’s right to
decide whether or not to apply for access.
Children in the early primary grades have a full routine focused day which consists of
school, homework, social interaction and a variety of physical activity. This busy schedule allows
for a healthy lifestyle. This is typically 10 or more hours, therefore doctors suggest parents to
determine how much screen time is appropriate for their children.
Children that are in within the 3-5 age range are recommended to have 1 hour or less of
screen time, as stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Children are in the beginning
learning stages and are experiencing their initial exposure to technology. Experts say that infants
who are 24-30 months should have little to no exposure to screen time because children’s brains
have something going on in their development. In today’s technology savvy world, having an
Acceptable Use Policy for technology at home could support your child in their growth and
technology exposure.
