Time: Procedure
Enter class
2mins *stand in the doorway of the classroom*
Teacher: “Hey guys. Come in. Get out your chemistry activity print out booklet and
your notebooks.”

20-30 min Quiz
Okay I have made up quiz on all the things that you have covered in chemistry
so far.
20- This needs to be completed under test conditions. So if you could disperse so
30mins that you are not sitting next to each other.
The test should only take you 20mins, however I will give you 30 mins.
If you finish early just put up your hand and I will give you an activity to work
whilst everyone else finishes.
Set timer for 30 mins
Assist students where necessary
Times up- make sure you have your name on the quiz
Collect quiz

Recap – questioning
-What are ions?
Atoms that have gained or lost an electron hence making the atom hold a charge
-What are cations?
Positively charged ions. Normally metals.
3mins
-What are anions?
Negative charged ions. Normally non-metals.
-what are radicals?
They are non-metals that have bonded together and still hold an overall charge.
-what is an example of a cation, anion, and radical ?
NA+, O2-, NH4+

Introduce writing and naming chemical formulae
When ionic compounds bond together they create an overall net charge of 0.
5mins This means that the positive charges and negative charges need balance out.
Go through two examples on the board:
-NaCl
-MgCl2
-Mg (OH)2
-NaOH
Note: Make sure to differentiate working out from the actual answer.
********************************************************************
Writing and naming chemical formulae
Hand out writing and naming chemical formulae worksheet
5mins Provide then with cut outs. Tell them how visualizing the number of each ions
can be really helpful
Allow students to work through that worksheet
Assist where necessary
When students finish give them instructions to move onto the next activity
********************************************************************
Writing and naming chemical formulae
10 Get students to work through writing and naming chemical formula questions
mins in their chemistry booklet.
Assist students where necessary
********************************************************************
Conclusion
Teacher: “5 mins left. Pack up your area. Whatever you didn’t finish in your booklets.
Now need to be completed as HW before tomorrow.”
5mins ********************************************************************
Wipe off whiteboard
Clean up work area
Evaluation of Student Learning:
Monitor student’s participation in classroom activities
Monitor student’s questions during one on one interactions
Monitor student’s responses to prompting questions
Mark quiz to access understanding
Self-Evaluation/Reflection:
Do the student have firm grasp on ions, cation, and anions?
Do students need more scaffolding?
Did students need more time on Quiz?
Is the work pitched at an appropriate level?
