 The first part of your IPD should be structured to give

you the necessary breadth of experience, as defined in
ICE’s Development Objectives (DOs).

 The second part should be a gradual progression

(dependent on your personal development and
commitment) towards increasing responsibility. This
part should also provide time for consolidation of your
experience and for preparation for the Professional

EXPERIENCE REPORT – A4 Foreword (3)

Name: Mr John Wong ICE Membership 1234567

Period/Company/Role Projects Responsibilities
Nov95 – May 96 XYZ Hotel construction, Kowloon.  Coordinating and Managing
Project Manager Steel framed structure with subcontractors
ABC Design and Build cladding, foundations and related  Liaison with client and design team

Approx Value $260m procedures
 etc
etc etc etc
Dates/ Employer/ Job Nature/complexity/size/value Emphasise responsibilities not a list of tasks
Title You may need to “lump together”
areas of similar activities

Make good use of the A4 Foreword use the 2000 words to:
 focus on the more important aspects of your work
 emphasise those areas that contributed most to achieving
the Attributes
 discuss what you learnt
 highlight your significant achievements
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 12
EXPERIENCE REPORT – Other Thoughts

Adopt a good technical style of report writing:

 Cover page (signed by you and lead sponsor)
 Index/ list of contents
 Indexed Appendices (with separators?)
 Section titles
 Sub-titles
 Title numbering system
 Line spacing?
 A margin referencing system to the Attributes ?
 Good standard of English

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 13

EXPERIENCE REPORT – Other Thoughts

Improve your report by including:

 appropriate photographs referenced in the text
 don’t forget to give them figure numbers and titles
 make sure they are good quality
 look out for “hidden messages”
 relevant diagrams, tables, charts and
sketches
 organisational diagrams showing your position in the company
 relevant Appendix material, referenced in the text, to demonstrate
examples of your work to show how you have achieved all of the
ATTRIBUTES.
Failure to submit supporting evidence of your own work
could result in failing your review through lack of evidence
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 14
EXPERIENCE REPORT – Other Thoughts

 Avoid the HK “shared pudding recipe” approach to report

writing:
“After receiving a Bachelor degree in Civil and Environmental
Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in
2002, I joined XYZ company as an Assistant Engineer in 2003 to
pursue my career in Civil Engineering. With the objective of becoming
a Civil Engineer I joined the Engineering Graduate scheme A jointly
provided by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) and XYZ in
September 2003”
 Keep to the word count – 2000 words is NOT 3500 words!
 Don’t underplay your experience and responsibility but do not
overplay it either!
 Remember – anything you put in your report could form the
basis of discussion at the review. You must be able to discuss
and defend anything you claim to have done.
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 15
EXAMPLE EXPERIENCE REPORTS

 Let’s review three example reports A

 Write down your immediate observations

B
about each one
 Let’s discuss C

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 16

THE PROJECT REPORT

RH Educational Consultants Ltd

PROJECT REPORT - Requirements (1)

 ICE 3001A requirements

 4000 words report (CPR) – 2000 (MPR)
Should
 demonstrate your competence
 describe a project(s) in which you have played a
major role including taking the lead in some part
 Indicate clearly your role
 Give background to important decisions for which
you were responsible or significantly contributed
 Show where you have exercised independent
engineering and professional judgement
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 18
PROJECT REPORT - Requirements (2)

It is NOT a report about a Project

It is a report that allows you to demonstrate some “in
depth” aspect of your experience
It is a report where the project is a “vehicle” by
which you can demonstrate the attributes by
presenting and discussing:
 your involvement
 how you influenced decisions, progress
 what you were thinking
 your overall understanding
 etc
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 19
PROJECT REPORT - Choice of Project (1)

 Choose a Project where YOU:

 can demonstrate competence
 have played a major part
 have taken a lead in some aspect
 have exercised Independent Judgement
 can demonstrate your decision-making
 will use it as the basis for the 15 minute “scene setting”
presentation at the start of your review (which part of your
project will you present verbally and which will be in writing
in the report?)

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 20

PROJECT REPORT - Choice of Project (2)

 Choose a Project :
 where you can demonstrate achievement of a
significant number (not necessarily all) of the
attributes – any not covered must be evident in the
Experience Report
 is relatively recent in your experience
 that can cover more than one project (but you should
justify why more than one and no more that two)
 that is not necessarily a whole project from
conception to completion
 has an appropriate title

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 21

PROJECT REPORT – Other Thoughts

 as with the Experience Report, adopt a good technical

style of report writing and presentation (see previous
slides)
 describe/set the scene about the project itself as
quickly as possible
 retain as many of the 4000/2000 words as possible to:
 describe and discuss your influence and
contribution
 demonstrate the attributes etc
 include relevant Appendix material, referenced in the
text, to demonstrate examples of your work to show
how you have achieved the ATTRIBUTES
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 22
YOUR PROJECT REPORT

 Think about your intended Project Report

 Which Attributes will be covered in your
report?
 Let’s discuss

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 23

BOTH REPORTS

RH Educational Consultants Ltd

BOTH REPORTS (1)

 Use “I” , avoid “we” – the reports are about YOU

 Demonstrate the Attributes
 Keep them concise
 Use illustrations and appendices to make an “interesting read”
 Quantify your examples and avoid vague, unsubstantiated
statements (I learnt a lot on this job…)
 Use numbered sections and contents list
 Remember: Name; Candidate No.;
 Signature; Lead Sponsor’s signature
 Ensure that you can discuss and defend all aspects of your
reports – anything you submit is “fair game” for questions
and/or the basis of the Written Exercise
RH Educational Consultants Ltd 25
BOTH REPORTS (2)

 DON’T
 Use abbreviations without explanation
 Use slang
 Use the ICE logo (or your employer’s)
 Make silly mistakes
 Don’t assume, hint, infer
 DO
 Check and edit (many times)
 Ask colleagues and friends to read and critique

 REMEMBER
 The quality of your reports will influence your Reviewers’
perception of you before they have even met you
 Make them as good as you can!

RH Educational Consultants Ltd 26

REMEMBER ….

 Before meeting you the only things your Reviewers

know about you is what you have told them in your
written submission.

 This is your first opportunity to demonstrate you

have the attributes of a professional engineer and
‘sets the scene’ in the minds of the reviewers.

 The second will be during the Review ...

GET IT RIGHT !!
IT WILL TAKE TIME, WORK AND EFFORT

RH Educational Consultants Ltd

THE REVIEWERS’ ROLE

They:
 Receive, review and evaluate your documentation and
measure it against the nine attributes;
 formulate lines of questioning at the review;
 write and agree TWO different written exercises based on
your experience and what you have presented in your
written submission and within the context of the nine
attributes. These are sent to HK ICE offices in advance of
the review for checking and final approval;
 can (exceptionally) revise these questions on the day if
they have concerns and want to give you a final chance to
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of an apparent
area of weakness;
 receive and mark your written work against the criteria;
 determine if you have passed this area of assessment
