TRUE OR FALSE?
VOTE WITH YOUR FEET.
TRUE FALSE
•A big country can have a big population.
•A medium country can have a big population.
•A small country can have a big population.
•A big country can have a small population.
•A medium country can have a small population.
•A small country can have a small population.
•If a country has a large population, it has a large land area.
THE GLOBAL POPULATION

On October 31, 2011, the world’s population reached 7 billion people.

Today, the population is…

This clock is AWESOME.

YEAR
REASONS FOR POPULATION GROWTH

Population in the world has grown because:

The death rate has gone down.
 Death rate is the number of people out of every 1000 who die
in a year

 Why has death rate lowered?

 Better health care
 Better living conditions in many areas
of the world
REASONS FOR POPULATION
GROWTH
Population of the world has grown because:
Birthrate has gone up.
 Birthrate is the number of children born each year for every
1000 people
 In Asia, Latin America, and Africa, families
traditionally have more children to help with
the family farms.
 The Result: The population in Asia, Latin
America, and Africa is doubling every
25 years!
REASONS FOR POPULATION GROWTH
More Births + Less Death = More people

Birth rate + lower death rates has resulted in the population

doubling approximately every 25 years in regions like Asia, Latin
America and Africa.
CHALLENGES FROM POPULATION
GROWTH
More people = more food is needed
 Most continents have been able to increase food
production to meet the needs of a growing population
(irrigation systems, hardier plants)

 The continent struggling the most is Africa

 Lack of food is called a famine

 caused by warfare or crop failures
CHALLENGES FROM POPULATION
GROWTH
More people = resources used more quickly
 Many countries have faced shortages of water and housing

More people = strain on a country’s economy

 More people = more jobs needed
 More people – require more services (hospitals, schools, etc.)
CHECK POINT: ARE YOU LEARNING?
1. Death rate has gone down 3. Which is NOT a challenge of
because: population growth:
a. Better government a. Famine
b. Less pollution
b. Better healthcare c. Water shortages
c. Better economy d. More jobs needed
e. More hospitals needed

2. More food is needed on Earth

because:
a. The sea levels are rising
b. There is high obesity in the USA
c. There are more people who
need food to survive
POPULATION
DISTRIBUTION
POPULATION DISTRIBUTION:
WHERE PEOPLE LIVE
Land covers 30%
of the Earth’s
surface, and only
half of this land is
usable by humans.

**deserts, high
mountains, and ice-
covered land cannot
support large numbers
of people.
POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
People are not distributed (spread) evenly
on Earth’s usable land.

When considering places to live, what kinds of features do

you think people look for?

 Fertile soil
 Mild climate
 Natural resources
 Water resources
POPULATION DISTRIBUTION CONT’D
2/3 of the world’s people are
located in 5 regions that have
the most natural resources
1. East Asia
2. South Asia
3. Southeast Asia
4. Europe
5. Eastern North
America
**In most regions, more people live near cities
than in rural areas, because there are more jobs
and resources readily available in the cities.
POPULATION

Is Population the same as Population Density? NO!

 Population is the total number of people in a given area, such as cities,

countries, and states.

 Population Density is a measure of the number of people living in an

area.

 Population density is the number of people per Square mi/km

POPULATION DENSITY
Number of people per square mile/kilometer
Total population is divided by total area
REMEMBER, THE WORLD’S POPULATION IS
NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED!

Norway and Malaysia have the same amount of land

(approx. 130,000 sq. miles); however, the population
densities of these two countries are very different:

 Norway has approx. 40 people per square mile

 Malaysia has approx. 205 people per square mile
POPULATION DENSITY CONT’D

Population density is an average…remember,

population is not evenly distributed!
For example: Argentina has a population density
of approx. 36 people per square mile; however,
since nearly 1/3 of the population lives around
the city of Buenos Aires, the population density
of the city is as high as
5,723 people per square mile!
CHECK POINT:
ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?
1. T/F - Population density it the total number of
people living in an area.

2. T/F – Population is not evenly distributed around the

Earth.

3. T/F – Urban areas have a higher population density

than rural areas.
POPULATION
MOVEMENT
POPULATION MOVEMENT

•Migration – movement of a
group from one region to another
WHY PEOPLE MIGRATE

Push factors - reasons people

leave a region
 Shortage of farmland
 Few jobs

Pull Factors - reasons people are

drawn to another region
Lure of more or better jobs
POPULATION MOVEMENT –
INTERNAL MIGRATION
•Internal Migration is
movement within a
country
•Urbanization – growth
of cities

**Nearly half of the world’s population lives in cities.

People move to cities to find jobs. They will usually find
those jobs in manufacturing or public services.
POPULATION MOVEMENT –
INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION
International migration – movement between countries

Emigrant – person leaving where they were born and moving to

another country

Immigrant – person who moves into a country from another

Memory trick: A person is an emigrant in the country they

exited and an immigrant in the country they are coming into

**Immigration has greatly increased in the last 200 years, partly due to improved
transportation
WHAT IS A REFUGEE?

Refugees are people

forced to flee to another
country to escape wars,
persecution, or natural
disasters

Can you think of any groups that

are refugees?
Palestinian refugees
EFFECTS OF MIGRATION
1. What effects do you think
emigration has on the
countries that people are
leaving?

2. What effects do you think

immigration has on the
countries that people are
moving to?
CHECK POINT:
ARE YOU AWAKE?
1. International migration has increased in recent years due to:
a. Better transportation
b. More social networking
c. Lack of jobs

2. Decide if the following is a push or pull factor:

a. More jobs
b. War
c. Famine
d. Clean water
DEMOGRAPHICS
WHAT ARE DEMOGRAPHICS?
Characteristics of a population
Examples:
 Male to Female ratio
 Life expectancy
 Birthrate and death rate
 Literacy rate

Can you think of any other examples?

DIVERGENT BAR GRAPHS

Divergent bar graphs are used to show population growth and decline.
• Positive growth (increase in population) is shown either above or to the right of zero on the
graph.
• Negative growth (decrease in population) is shown either below or to the left of zero and is
reflected using negative numbers.
