BSE-3 Mathematics MATH 105- Number Theory

Mr. Still John Reyes

Assignment 1

Algebraic Number Theory

The branch of number theory with the basic aim of studying properties of

algebraic integers in algebraic number fields of finite degree over the field of

rational numbers. (https://www.encyclopediaofmath.org)

The study of roots of polynomials with rational or integral coefficients. These

numbers lie in algebraic structures with many similar properties to those of the integers.

Combinatorial Number Theory

Combinatorial number theory, in very loose terms, can be described as an area of

mathematics which is a cross between combinatorics and number theory. More precisely,

the area concerns structures of integers (or similar sets), with some number theoretic

properties, which can be studied mainly by combinatorial means, rather than, for

example, by algebraic methods. (http://www.cantab.net)

Analytic Number Theory

Analytic number theory is the branch of number theory which

uses real and complex analysis to investigate various properties of integers and prime

numbers. Examples of topics falling under analytic number theory include Dirichlet L-

series, the Riemann zeta function , the totient function , and the prime number

theorem. (http://mathworld.wolfram.com)
Computational Number Theory

Computational number theory is the branch of number theory concerned with

finding and implementing efficient computer algorithms for solving various problems in

number theory. Much progress has been made in this field in recent years, both in terms

of improved computer speed and in terms of finding more efficient algorithms. Two

important applications of computational number theory are primality testing and prime

factorization of large integers. (http://mathworld.wolfram.com) It presents a complete

treatment of number-theoretic algorithms.
