Unit 1: Engineering Design Process and Construction Technologies - Fall 2018 Learning Guide

Essential Questions:
➔ What is the engineering design process? How is it used in order to develop, model and create new products or processes?
➔ What methods of communication are used in order to represent solutions to engineering problems?
➔ How do the engineering properties of materials determine the selection of materials? Which forces must be considered when designing solutions? How do
the resultant forces determine the selection of materials and design of solutions?
➔ How are the tools selected and used in a safe manner?

Unit 1: Engineering Design and Construction Technologies Task Guide - Fall 2018
Part 1: Learning Standards for Development and Design:
1.1: Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process.
1.3: Produce and analyze multi-view drawings (orthographic projections) and pictorial (isometric, oblique, perspective) drawings using various
techniques.
1.4: Interpret and apply scale and proportion to orthographic projections and pictorial drawings, such as, ¼” = 1’0”, 1 cm = 1 m.
1.5: Interpret plans, diagrams, and working drawings in the construction of prototypes or models.

Furniture Design Project! Part 1...
We are going to build a piece of furniture! There are a lot of things here, so please read and highlight carefully:

● Structures:
○ You are going to work in assigned groups to complete this project.
○ EACH PERSON in the group is responsible for documenting their work (even if you are working
together).
○ Every day, you will receive an individual Habits of Work (HOW) grade reflecting your performance
for the day.

● Problem:
○ I don’t think there are enough seats in the classroom. I would like you to design and build a few
extra for me!

● Criteria and Constraints:

○ You must use cardboard and packing or masking tape. That’s it.
○ It must support you!
○ You have the next two weeks to complete it. It must be built by 9/28.

● The Process:
○ Follow the Engineering Design Process in order to develop your design.
○ Learn about the ways that you can represent the piece of furniture at msbrett.weebly.com under the “EDP Furniture Design” tab.
○ Complete the practice activities and apply your new knowledge to creating a scaled blueprint of the piece before you start to build.
○ Gather materials and construct!

● Evaluation:
○ Turn in the required assignments and complete the assessments for your content grade.
○ Use the Science Competency 3 rubric to evaluate your ability to model scientific information.

● Final Notes:
○ You will never, ever, EVER lose points for your final product not “working” properly.
○ I am assessing your process and your understanding of the content, not the final product. Please
do not be discouraged that this is challenging and probably will not be perfect when you are
finished.
