Project Summary:
Karwan Development Foundation and Rural Development Association entered into an agreement on
10th August, 2018 for installation of 01 Deep Well for the underprivileged and needy communities of
District Tharparkar. This report provides completion details for installation of 01 Deep Well in 01 village
of UC Gurira Beh, in Tehsil Mithi of Tharparkar District.
The poor people of Thar Desert have been facing a dominant issue of drinking water. In most of the
villages, they have very deep dug wells ranging a depth of 150 to 250 feet. Dragging out water for
drinking, washing and animal consumption has been a very vigorous exercise.
A group of 03 to 05 people would drag out a bucket full of water though a 200 feet tiresome walk on a
scorching sandy track. At some places few donkeys or a camel is used to pull out
the bucket. The difficulty to get the most important commodity results in very less per capita use of
water by the native people leading to several health and hygiene issues. In this scenario, women and
girls suffer the most, as traditionally it is role of women to arrange for
Drinking water, secondly, they are the ones who use least quantity of water for washing and bathing,
hence at greater risk of health hazards.
Through installation of Deep Wells with a Hand pump in accordance with sphere standards not only
improves access to water for these poor communities, but also provides safer source of drinking water
as compared to open wells.
RDA with the generous support from Karwan Development Foundation has successfully completed
installation of 01 Hand pump in UC Gurira Beh, in Tehsil Mithi of District Tharparkar
A total of 341 men, women and children have improved access to safe drinking water through this
intervention.
Project Context:
Geographically district Tharparkar is spread on 19,799.7 square kilometers. Total Population of this
District is 1,299,735 with male: female ratio of 55:45, whereas annual growth rate is 3.13%. 40.6% of
the district population is non-Muslim. The district is totally desert area with very low annual rainfalls,
hence high degree of water scarcity prevails in the district. Majority of population dwells on rain fed
agriculture and the other major livelihood source is cattle. Government have succeeded in providing
piped water to few urban populations (Mithi, Chachro and Islamkot) during last decade, where the rural
communities have very scarce water availability and even more difficult accessibility. In District
Tharparkar, a long history of disasters; a continuous drought like situation has rendered its population
vulnerable to many problems including that of health, WASH, education and Food security.
Essential role of water in health, education, food security and basic sanitation is well realized by the
world but despite the fact we are living in 21st century, the population of District Tharparkar is still facing
water scarcity as well as poor quality and accessibility of available drinking water and that is root cause
of migration, malnutrition and vulnerability to other socioeconomic problems. As water is acknowledged
as basic human right it is very important to promote access to safe drinking water and hygiene practices
for the poor communities of Thar Desert.
KDF provides communities in need with localized clean water sources and sanitation facilities. Besides
providing clean water KDF also works with local communities to promote education and awareness in
basic hygiene practices and prevention of waterborne diseases. Majority of the people living below the
poverty line are compelled to drink from stagnant, unclean sources of water and usually they have to
fetch this essential commodity from a distant of miles. KDF in partnership with Rural Development
Association-RDA for improving access to drinking water through installation of deep water wells in
distant needy villages of Thar Desert.

Project implementation Details:

Identification of beneficiaries:
RDA field team surveyed various villages of 01 UC of District Tharparkar, where they held focus group
discussions with the villagers on availability, accessibility and quality of drinking water. Through this
process affordability and community ownership aspects were also discussed. A total of 04 villages were
visited out of which 01 village Kandaro Soomra were selected for installation of Deep well with hand
pumps. (See Annex 01)

Community Participation:
RDA field team held initial meetings with community of target villages and oriented on project activities.
Through subsequent meetings village level Community Organizations (COs) were organized in each
village. A Terms of Partnership (ToP) defining roles and responsibilities of RDA and community were
signed with these COs. A 05 member Water User Committee (WUC), responsible for maintenance and
repair of the water facility and hygiene promotion activities was organized and oriented in all the 04
villages.

Procurement:
Following RDA procurement procedures, services of local vendors were hired for installation of deep
wells and constructions of platforms in accordance with national DRR guidelines. Where, the materials
were procured from local market through a procurement committee that includes one person from each
target village.
Capacity Building:
RDA field staff conducted sessions on importance of safe drinking water hygiene practices and its
impacts on health and overall socio-economic well-being to sensitize the members of COs and WUCs
in each village.
In each targeted village, RDA field staff conducted community level sessions on hygiene practices such
as importance of drinking clean water, washing hands before taking meals and after using toilet, and
sensitized the participants for personal and environmental hygiene.
At the time of handing over, the WUC members were provided training on maintenance of the hand
pump and how to keep facility premises clean from pollutants. The community was also provided
technical knowledge on use of spill over water for plantation of fruit trees or establishing a kitchen
garden for economic as well as environmental benefits.

Quality Assurance:
RDA management through frequent field visits ensured that quality of materials and delivery of key
messages is not compromised.

Sustainability:
Community ownership and participation is very important in sustainable development. RDA ensured
that community participates at each stage of project implementation. For this, in each village a CO and
a 05 member WUC committee was formed, sensitized and their capacity enhanced for operating and
maintenance of drinking water facility. The target communities were brought under legal obligation
through signing of Terms of Partnerships (ToPs) that defined community’s role in achieving project
objectives.
