Exercise Sheet 2

Task 1:
The pole in fig. 1 is tethered by three ropes on its tip. The
α forces in the ropes are F1 , F2 und F3 (Fig. 1). The pole
and the ropes are in the same plane (coplanar).
F1 60◦ F3
F2 (1) Determine the angle α, graphically as well as
analytically, so that the resultant (sum vector) of
30◦
the 3 forces in the direction of the pole acts.
(2) Calculate the magnitude of the resultant.
(3) What is the minimum value of |F3 |, so that the
task for the given |F1 | and |F2 | is solvable?
Given: |F1 | = 5 kN, |F2 | = 4 kN, |F3 | = 3 kN.
Fig. 1

Task 2:
A quadratic body with a mass m is supported by two
g
cords. A force F with the line of action through the center
of gravity of the body is acting on it. (Fig. 2).

m (1) Draw the free-body diagram.

45◦ 45◦ (2) Calculate the forces in the cords as a function of F,
so that the resultant of all forces becomes zero.
F (3) What is the maximum absolute value of the force
G F , so that the cords lie under tension only?
(4) Determine the forces in the cords graphically for
Fig. 2
|F| = 1 kN, so that the resultant of all forces
becomes zero.
Given: m = 300 kg, |g| = 10 sm2 .

Task 3:
Two pulleys W1 and W2 (each weight force G), joined
through a bar S1 , are supported by a rope S2 on an in-
clined plane (tilt angle α), which is considered as smooth
W2
S2 and frcitionless.
The force H acts on the pulley W1 . The system is in static
W1 S1 β
H equilibrium. (Fig. 3).
G
(1) Draw the free-body diagrams of the 2 subsystems
G including all the forces acting.
α (2) Determine the forces from both pulleys acting on
Fig. 3
the plane, as well as the force in bar S1 and in rope
S2 .
Given: |G| = 2|H| = 10 kN, α = 30◦ , β = 15◦ .
