Drought starts The drought situation caused by lack of rains in Sekhukhune has seriously affected parts of
the 746 villages constituting the district municipality, resulting into them being declared Water
Disaster Areas.
This follows the recent in-depth assessment made by the District Municipality following a
series of reports that the Vergelegeen Dam supplying Jane Furse and its surrounding areas,
to bite in Nkadimeng Dam supplying Mphanama and the surrounding villages and Piet Gouws Dam sup-
plying Ga-Masemola village and its neighbors are silting (drying up).
The district municipality says this water shortage is so serious that even towns like Burgers-
fort, Steelpoort and Ohrigstad, which had enjoyed a fair share of potable, clean running water
for years, are faced with water restrictions today. District municipality spokesperson, Mr Willy
Sekhukhune Mosoma told the newspaper “Residents of Burgersfort Town In Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Mu-
nicipality are urged to use water sparingly. This is as a result of the Spekboom
which is drying up currently due to shortage of rain. And the backup boreholes used to aug-
ment the dam is also producing limited water. This does not mean that we have reached critical
times, we are saying that with a lack of rain we might face critical water shortages in the near
future. That is why it is important for residents to preserve the little water that is currently availa-
ble. Our supply to Burgersfort Town is mainly from the Spekboom, boreholes and 2 mega liters
per day from the Mooihoek scheme. As precautionary measures, we urge residents to avoid
watering lawns, using pipes to wash cars, to name but a few.”
Mr Mosoma said during the recent Water Summit held recently at Loskop Dam, delegates
the 300 delegates representing municipalities, mining, agriculture, water forums, university
experts, water boards, water users associations sharply raised the problem of severe water
shaortages, drying up boreholes and dams. “It is indeed true that majority of our water sources
in the district are running dry and that poses a serious challenge to us as the water service pro-
vider and to all our people. We are working together with the Department of Water and Sanita-
tion and the Presidency to find a permanent solution to this challenge” he said.
Executive Mayor Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila say: “What makes our problems worse is
that even our flagship projects like De Hoop Dam is unable to meet its desired results because
the Malekana Water Treatment Plant does not have enough electricity supply capacity to push
water up to Jane Furse. The Moutse Bulk Water Supply project has since been interrupted
before completion. We are working very hard with other government spheres to solve all these
problems so that our people can receive water.” Ramaila also highlighted some of the impor-
tant facts that were agreed upon during the Water Summit, which, if considered carefully, can
produce better results for Sekhukhune and it’s people. These issues are:
Live love
The NG Church Burgersfort recently
held an outreach in towards the commu-
nity, practically going out into the world
to bring the message of God’s love and
saving grace.
The church is a beacon on the hill in
the middle of town and on Sunday 14
September they divided into groups for
an outreach project. Some of the con-
gregation headed up the hill towards the
cross behind the municipality to blow
the shofars, some headed to Dilokong
Hospital to visit the sick children and
patients there and deliver a message
of hope. The women of the church
made special dolls that was given to the
children with a message that each of us
are different, but also very special
to God.
A group headed to the Tubatse
Crossing Mall to deliver messages
of hope to those working in the
shops. Cold drinks were handed to
drivers of taxis and other vehicles
with a message of God’s love. A
group stayed at the church to pray
for the area and those heading out.
The children went to the Morone
Shopping Centre where they
interacted with customers. while
carrying boards with messages
about God’s love.

Command those who are
rich in this present world
not to be arrogant nor to
put their hope in wealth,
which is so uncertain, but
to put their hope in God,
who richly provides us with
everything for our enjoy-
ment. 18 Command them to
do good, to be rich in good
deeds, and to be generous
and willing to share. 19 In
this way they will lay up
treasure for themselves as
a firm foundation for the
coming age, so that they
may take hold of the life that
is truly life.
