VIADUCT AT CH:-22+935

1.0 Geotechnical investigation for the proposed viaduct at chainage 22+935 was

conducted for the proposed 4 lane new bridge. Number of bore holes was

determined as per TOR, clause no. 4.11.4.4, point no.-1 and depth was

determined from the practical consideration of foundation design point of view. At

this bridge location five nos. of bore hole of was drilled upto a maximum depth of

15.00m from the existing ground level. The location of borehole is shown in the

borehole location plan in Fig. The details of boreholes with the termination depth,

Bed level and water level are shown in the following table.

Bore Termination Date of Date of

Hole No Depth (m) commencement completion
BH - 1 15.00 04/03/2006 05/03/2006
BH – 2 15.00 04/03/2006 05/03/2006
BH – 3 15.00 05/03/2006 05/03/2006
BH – 4 15.00 06/03/2006 07/03/2006
BH - 5 15.00 06/03/2006 07/03/2006

No Artesian condition was encountered in boreholes. Laboratory tests were

conducted on the samples (DS) collected from the boreholes. The field

investigation data and the laboratory tests conducted on the soil samples indicate

the presence of different layers. Bore-log is shown on Data sheet indicating

Standard Penetration Test N value. The subsoil formation as revealed from the

field investigation sheets.

The details of different layers of soil encountered in different boreholes are

furnished in the field bore logs data sheets.

On close scrutiny of field and laboratory tests it reveals that the sub-soil

formation at this location consist of very dense grayish highly weathered rock up

to the explored depth of 15.00m.

Safe bearing capacity of 5.0m dia circular foundation have been computed from

3.5m to 8.00m depth and shown in the following table, detail calculations are

shown in the subsequent pages.

Founding Depth Scour Depth Dia of the Safe Bearing Capacity

Below EGL Considered(m) foundation (m) (ton/m 2)

3.5 23.00
5.0 29.50
1.0 5.0
6.0 39.80
8.0 45.50

However, type, size and depth of the foundation depends upon the design

requirements and Bearing Capacity / Pile Capacity may be obtained by Geotech /

Bridge expert using the test results to fulfill the specific requirement.

Chemical analysis of soil and water was done and results are shown in Table

No.- 2 & 3 respectively. The pH value was determined according to IS:2720

(Part- 26)-1987 by electrometric method (Standard method). Total sulphate

content was determined as per IS:2720 (Part-27)-1987 by precipitation method

(Standard Method). Chloride content was determined as per IS : 2720 (Part-21)-

1987 and that for water as per IS: 3025-1964. All these results are within

permissible limits and need no special measure during design and construction

of the foundation of the bridge.

2.0 LABORATORY TESTING

No laboratory testable samples were there due to presence of weathered

decomposed product of rock.
