October 7th, 2018 PRELUDE Chorale Prelude on I Call to You, Lord Jesus Christ Bach

Holy Communion Now the Feast WELCOME

INVOCATION
INTRODUCTION
In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Today’s gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable Amen.
with a story we find comforting. Jesus’ saying on divorce is another of his
rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God’s law. GATHERING SONG: All Are Welcome (ELW 641)
Jesus’ rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should
challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a GREETING

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

God of grace, you have given us minds to know you, hearts to love you,
and voices to sing your praise. Fill us with your spirit, that we may
celebrate your glory and worship you in spirit and truth, through Jesus
Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Job 1:1-1; 2:1-10

Tone:
This passage is part of the prologue of Job. The righteous man Job is
severely afflicted as the result of a wager between God and Satan (“the
accuser”). Job responds at first with great patience, but the rest of the book
will show him lamenting and protesting.

SECOND READING: Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12

Quoting from the psalms, this passage from Hebrews emphasizes that
Jesus, the one through whom God created everything and who sits at God’s
right hand, is also the one who experienced human suffering and death in
order to blaze the path of salvation for us.
1
Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the
prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he
appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3He
is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being,
and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made VERSE: If we love one another, God | lives in us*

inherited is more excellent than theirs. GOSPEL Mark 10:2-16

Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are
speaking, to angels. 6But someone has testified somewhere, As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon

Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. Glory to you, O Lord.
As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, 9but we do see

words “born of the virgin Mary,” until the words “he descended to the
dead.” OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Longing for God’s will to be fulfilled among us, we pray persistently for
the church, the world, and all people in need.
Please sit or kneel as you are able.
OFFERING PRAYER

Let us pray. O God, ruler of heaven and earth, all that we have and all that
we are come through you. We offer back in thanksgiving a portion of what
you have given us: our time, our work, and our wealth. With them we
dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made,
through Jesus Christ, who gave himself for the salvation of the world.
Amen.

DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lord’s body
and blood, each time the words “Do this for the remembrance of me,” are
spoken.

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the
sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the
cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his
disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to
drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and
PREFACE for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await
his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all
who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and
forever. Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER

Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
