Observation reports

The following report is aimed to describe teacher Sebastian Olivas’ class who is
in charge of level three from the communicative program for adults. The
observation was carried out on Sunday, October 15 th, 2017 and lasted 30
minutes. Techer Sebastian is using Open mind 1 book and in his class he was
to cover unit 6. Since the observation was not announced there was not pre-
observation meeting. Teacher Sebastian sent the lesson plan on time.

Regarding the lesson plan, I consider that the objectives can be improved since
some of them seem too general, unclear or even some do not look like actual
objectives. Therefore; I recommend to work on that aspect. By the time the
observation started teacher Sebastian was explaining a little bit about the
present progressive tense. According to the lesson plan and what I could
observe teacher Sebastian was working on activity number two. During the
activity, students were telling each other about what activities they were doing
at that moment. The teacher reminded students to try to speak only English.
After having finish the talking, students were asked to participate by saying what
their classmates were doing. There was little participation from students who
seemed not to be engaged or willing to intervene in the class. Due to this issue I
recommend to take action on this by including activities that indirectly push
students to participate. Otherwise students will definitely be behind on their
speaking skill. Another aspect that should be improved is the fact that while of
the students was giving his answers, some others were talking. After carrying
out a couple of interventions, students were asked to move to go to page 62
and work on a listening exercise. I feel that the teacher’s voice should be a little
bit louder. Students were doing a drill exercise on verbs ending with “ing”. After
that he explain some pronunciation patterns about th sound. The observation
finished on the listening exercises.

In conclusion teacher Sebastian class should be improved in the aspects


mentioned above. It is really important to find strategies to make students
participate otherwise the objectives for every class as well as students learning
will not be reached.
