Incident Description:
Information circulating on social media suggests that Renamo’s armed wing is planning to launch full scale
military actions targeting Frelimo strongholds and major cities in Nampula Province as of Thursday 1
September 2016. The source advised all residents to stay indoors on Thursday as a precaution.
Additional information seen by Rhula Intelligent Solutions correlates with the above. According to the
information, Renamo has elected to intensify attacks in the lead up to the resumption of talks with international
mediators on 12 September.
Unconfirmed information suggests that Renamo plans to make a statement by targeting some of the larger and
more prominent towns and cities, while at the same time continuing with attacks on the main routes to disrupt
the flow of traffic and goods. Attacks on smaller FADM/PRM/FIR positions are also said to be part of this plan.
Information additionally indicates that Renamo activities in Zambézia, Manica, Sofala and Inhambane
provinces are to increase. A possible attack in Gaza/Maputo province is also rumoured to be in the pipeline.
The attacks are likely to be postponed due to the fact that details have been leaked and therefore
compromised.
