1 – Engine timing:

Combustion timing can be advanced or retarded by altering the amount of compression rings between the
combustion
chamber and the sleeve.
For example, reducing the total amount of compression rings will advance the combustion greatly, and vice
versa.
Running an engine with advanced timing condition, will be powerfully and aggressive, but with the risk to
generate
vibration and overheating.
Running an engine with retarder timing condition, power performance will be slower but easy in mixture
tuning.
The right timing make your engine powerfully, eliminating vibration and overheating.
Aspects that can influence your combustion timing:
- Glow plug temperature: colder glow plug will retard the combustion timing, wormer glow plug will advance
your
combustion timing.
- Altitude where you operate your model: The air density also affects the combustion timing, the less air is
available
the more you have to advance the combustion timing.
- Nitro Fuel percentage: Increasing the percentage of Nitro in your fuel will also advance the combustion
timing and
might require an increased amount of compression rings to get the perfect timing. Nitro Fuel percentage
have
great effect in your timing, than we recommend to set under head shim amount in order to get best engine
performance avoiding vibrations, and overheating.
Here below is a table with percentage Nitro and a general amount of compression rings advised in your new
REX57HR-3D using a Novarossi HR3 glow plug (colder) and STD Heli Fuel.
15% nitro = 0.3 mm (1 aluminum compression ring measuring 0.3mm)
20% nitro = 0.4 mm (1 aluminum compression ring + 1 brass compression ring measuring 0.1mm)
30% nitro = 0.5 mm (1 aluminum compression ring + 1 brass compression ring measuring 0.2mm)
Shimming NOTE: The upper value are advised for a new engine, after approximately 100 fly will be normally
necessary
remove 0.1mm shim to compensate normal engine unsure.
2 – Carburetor barrel throttle position setting:
When setting up the linkage between your throttle servo and the carburetor, make sure the throttle valve is
positioned as
following:
The mark on the throttle valve should be in the middle of the markings of the 'fully closed' position and the
first of the 3
'hover' positions (marked on the carburetor body)
As shown on the picture below.
3 - Starting needle settings and break-in:
Starting needle settings are recommended as follows’ in the user's manual.
Low Speed needle: Turn the Low Speed needle completely open (counter clockwise), then close it 4 turns.
Note: The low speed needle also manage the mid-range, like explained in point 4.
Max Speed needle: Turn the High Speed needle completely closed (clockwise), then open it 2 turns.
4 - Final Tuning
Start the engine following the procedure shown in the manual.
Once the engine is running, adjust the idle RPM operating the Low Speed needle valve and not the throttle
opening.
Rich (open) the low speed mixture, to reduce idle RPM or lean (close) the low speed mixture, to increase idle
RPM until
get a nice idle.
High Speed setting: With new engine use recommended STD setting until the engine will break-in.
With already break-in engine, fly the helicopter and adjust the Max Speed needle for the optimal
performance and the
power you like, then you can adjust the Mid range.
Mid range tuning:
Mid range adjusting via the Low Speed needle is a fine tuning adjustment.
Hover the helicopter and listen engine sound, than you can understand if the middle range is too lean or too
rich..
Adjust the Low speed needle until you are satisfied in engine sound and temperature.
During this operation will be necessary re-adjust the mechanical throttle opening using TX trim to
compensate the idle
RPM variation in function the new Low speed setting.
During 3D maneuvers, the setting of the middle range can be check doing quick stop or pirouette
maneuvers, if the engine
RPM or sound is not constant or have some interruption, operating the Low speed needle is possible define
it.
5 - Additional tuning options and troubleshooting:
1- Put the carburetor back to factory settings (see point 3);
2- Install all compression shims included into original box (totaling 0.6 mm) which lower's compression
allowing easier
tuning;
3- Make sure the throttle curve and the carburetor barrel throttle in idle position is properly set (see point 2)
4- Hover your heli and rich the Low Speed needle 1/8th - 1/4 of a turn at a time until the engine temperature
and sound is
good.
If the setting is lean engine running will hot and it sound like its 4 stroking.
5- When satisfied with hover, do some vertical climb outs or 3D fly and tune Max Speed needle setting until
satisfied;
6- Use the engine for at least 1 gallon, and fine tune in very small increments until completely satisfied;
7- In case of new engine, after break-in fly, we recommend to replace the glow plugs with a new one.
8- If after many fly you feel lees power, replace the glow plug first, and if the situation don’t change, remove
0.1mm under
head shim a time to get back the good compression timing.

CARBURETOR O RING TIPS.

In case your engine come with 2 seal O ring in the carburetor (one in the intake, one in the carburetor
bushing) We advise to remove the one in the carburetor bushing.

Below a picture that show you the O ring to remove.

Removing this o ring the carburetor will entry more in the crankcase and the engine will run better with
the carb setting very constant.

In the Novarossi engine the real sealing o-ring is the one in the intake of the engine, the outside one (see
picture) are used for mechanical propose.

New engine will come normally without it from the box, in case your engine have this O-ring we advise to
remove it.
