CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND

Many problem are found by us as readers in the literary work that is

presented by the outhor in his work expressly. The type of problem is

concept by the outhor is the themes of the literary work. Whit literary work

someone can creat, improve and produce a work by describing any

accidents and experience in life. It is fundamentally an expression of life

trough the medium of language. But it is important to understand that

literature lived by virtue of life which it embodies. Because literature is a

vital record of any accidents have happened in live, the experienced of it,

and eved the literature is an imagination of someone cause of any

inspirations in life. Beside that, literary work is the depiction of real life that is

presented by the author in literary. The real life is the social condition of

society when the literary work appeared, or the reality that is happened in

life of the outhor.

As Drama, Poetry, Short Story and so on. Novels are literary works as well.

The novel is a long prose essay containing a series of stories of one's life

with those around him by highlighting the nature and nature of each

actor. Therefore many topics, we can see in the novel as one of the works of
literature. Therefore, the literary work is written by the writings of the outhor

can not be separated from the history of literature and socio-cultural

background. Rather than all that is reflected in his work. So, through Novel

Mine Till Midnight by Lisa Kleypas, researchers will try to research about

social culture.

Social culture is a social science and basic foundation related to science and

social (science) and understanding of basic knowledge and necessity adab;

Man as a cultural being; Man as a social being; Morality and law; Man and

the environment; Human science and technology; Multiculturalism and

Human Values (Love, Beauty, Suffering, Restlessness, Justice, Life View,

Responsibility, Devotion, Hope, Confidence, Death)

From the above opinion, it is almost the same as the actual conditions and

facts of the Londoner described by the author through the setting of this

novel. Where London is very inclined to live as Social Culture because of

their self-confidence and self-confidence and freedom as their reason in life.

For example in this novel, where she is a woman who chooses not to marry

and has no home and she enters her own time without someone as a

husband or family. And he chose to survive because of his situation as a

woman who replaced the role of his older brother as the head of the family

and as a personal choice in life. The basic reason of choice is freedom and
responsibility. The freedom to choose the way of life because he has a

nature that does not want to be governed or obey the command (husband)

and is responsible for his choice in life, of course, it shows that he is not

satisfied with all moral restrictions that apply to a person because the rule

prevents personal freedom . And besides that social culture can occur

because of economic factors that occur in Ms. Amalia Hathaway and Cam

Rohan are different circles.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Statement of ProblemIn this research, there are several problems identified

by the researcher needed to find the solution. The problem is like a question

that requires an answer.

They are: 1. How social culture attitudes are illustrated through this novel?
CHAPTER II

1.3 APPROACH

In analyzing the Novel, the researcher use sociological approach

The sociological approach goes beyond everyday common sense. Many

people believe they understand the world and the events taking place within

it, often justifying their understandings by calling it "common sense. "

However, they have not actually engaged in a systematic attempt to

understand the social world.

Sociology, is an attempt to understand the social world by situating social

events in their corresponding environment (i.e., socialstructure, culture,

history) and trying to understand social phenomena by collecting and

analyzing empirical data. This scientific approach is what differentiates

sociological knowledge from common sense.

1.4 METHOD

In analyzing the Novel, the researcher use Descriptive Methode.

Descriptive Method is used to describe characteristics of a population or

phenomena being studied. It does not answer question about how/when/why

the characteristics occurred. Rather it addresses the “what” question (what

are the characteristics of the population or situation being studied?) the

characteristics used to describe the situation or population are ussualy some

kind of categorical scheme also known as descriptive categories. For

example, the periodic table categorizes the elements. Scientists use

knowledge about the nature of electrons, protons and neutrons to devise this

categorical scheme. We noe take for granted the periodic table, yet it took

descriptive research to devise it. Descriptive research generally precedes

explanatory research. For example, over time the periodic table’s description

of the elements allowed scientists to explain chemical reaction and make

sound prediction when elements were combined.

Hence, descriptive research cannot describe what caused a situation. Thus,

descriptive research cannot be used as the basis of a causal relationship,

where one variable affects another. In other words, descriptive research can

be said to have a low requirement for internal validity.

The description is used for frekuencies, average and other statistical

calculations. Often the best approach, prior to writing descriptive research, is

to conduct a survey investigation. Qualitative research often has the aim of

description and researchers may follow-up with examinations of why the

observations exist and what the implications of the findings are.

1.5 ANALYSIS

- How is the attitude of social culture in this novel.

In this case is the social knowledge and human basic values which

include the aspects of objective knowledge (social) and subjective

knowledge aspect (human basic value), covering the material of Man and

the need of adab. Man as a cultural being; Man as a social being;

Morality and law; Man and the environment; Human science and

technology; Multiculturalism and Human Values (Love, Beauty, Suffering,

Restlessness, Justice, Life View, Responsibility, Devotion, Hope,

Confidence, Death.

The attitude that can be seen in the dialogue below is the basic human

values such as the responsibility and dedication that we can see in the

dialogue below:

Amelia: "I really hope my brothers will find a respectable man who

deserves to be married." (Do not miss the implications of that

sentence)

Lady Westcliff: "But you do not have that hope for yourself?"

Amelia: "No, I do not expect to get married".

Lady Westcliff: "Why?"

Amelia: "I have a responsibility to the family, they need me."

(Pages: 105)

The statement shows how Lady Westcliff's question about the future to

Amelia. Lady Westcliff in the above statement has interfered in her

personal affairs indirectly.

In addition to the above problems, other issues that demonstrate human

basic attitudes and values such as devotion can be seen in the dialogue

below:

Amelia: "I have a responsibility to the family, they need me."

(Page: 105)

Statement of Ms. Amelia Hathaway above shows that she will serve for

her family by not wanting to get married, she is more concerned with her

family than her future in terms of marriage.
