WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 9TH TO 15TH
OCTOBER, 2018

Review of weather for the last seven-
day period (1st to 7th October, 2018):
 Rainfall continued to be received over some parts of
the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West
of the Rift Valley;
 There was a general decrease in rainfall amounts
over much of the country;
 Day-time (maximum) temperatures increased over
most parts of the country while night-time
(minimum) temperatures increased over some
stations and decreased over others.
Forecast for the next seven days (9th to
15th October,2018):
The forecast indicates that:
 Rainfall is expected over parts of the Lake Victoria Basin,
the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Central and
South Rift Valley, the Central Highlands and the Coastal
strip;
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25
knots are expected over Northwestern Kenya throughout
the forecast period.

1. WEATHER REVIEW FOR THE LAST SEVEN DAYS (1ST TO 7TH OCTOBER, 2018)
1.1 Rainfall Review
Rainfall continued to be received over some parts of the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West
of the Rift Valley. The Central and South Rift Valley, the Central Highlands and the Coast also
recorded light to moderate rainfall as depicted in Figures 1 and 2.Comparison between the previous
seven days (24th to 30th September, 2018) with the period under review (1st to 7th October, 2018)
indicates ageneral decrease in rainfall amounts over much of the country.

During the period under review, Kanduyi Agricultural Station in Bungoma County recorded the
highest seven-day total rainfall of 71.4mm. Other stations that recorded significant seven-day total
rainfall amounts include Kisumu (62.8mm), Eluuya Girls in Bungoma County (56.8mm) and Kisii
(50.3mm).

Kisii Meteorological Station recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24 hours i.e. 48.3mm on
7th October,2018. Other stations that recorded heavy rainfall (20-50mm within 24hrs) include
Kanduyi Agricultural Station, Butere in Kakamega County, Eluuya Girls Station and Kisumu as depicted
in Figure 3.

 
 1.2 Temperature Review

Comparing this review period (24th to 30th September, 2018) with the period under review (1st to 7th
October, 2018) it is noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures increased over much of the
country with the exception of a few stations including Kisumu, Marsabit and Wilson. Night-time
(minimum) temperatures increased overs some stations including Eldoret, Kabarak and Makindu and
decreased over others including Wajir, Narok and Kitui.

Lodwar Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 37.6°C on 7th
October, 2018 while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum
temperature of 4.2oC on 1st October, 2018.The same stations recorded the highest seven-day average
maximum temperature of 36.7oC and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature of 6.0°C
respectively (see Figure4 below).

 
 2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 9TH TO 15TH OCTOBER 2018.

The forecast for the next seven-day period indicates that:

 Rainfall is expected over several parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the
Rift Valley, the Central and South Rift Valley, the Central Highlands and the Coastal strip;
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots are expected over Northwestern
Kenyathroughout the forecast period.

DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 9TH TO 15THOCTOBER 2018.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (Counties of
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, UasinGishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet,
Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia): are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals in the mornings during the forecast period. However, morning rains
are likely to occur over few places on Tuesday and Wednesday. Afternoon/night showers and
thunderstorms are expected over several places throughout the forecast period.

Northwestern (Counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu): is likely to experience sunny intervals
during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night.Morning rains are however likely to occur over few
places on Friday and Saturday while afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur
over few places on Tuesday.

Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) (Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga,
Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka): are likely to experience early morning cloudiness with
the possibility of rains over few places that will give way to sunny intervals. Afternoon/night showers
are expected over few places throughout the forecast period.

Northeastern (Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo): is likely to experience mainly
sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night.

Southeastern Lowlands (Counties of Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta): are likely
to experience mainly sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night.

 
 The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale): is likely to experience
mainly sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. However morning showers
are likely to occur over few places on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
