Addition and Subtraction Activity

Grade: 2nd

Subject: Mathematics

Length of Lesson: 1 Hour

Lesson Overview/Rationale: Students with increase their knowledge of addition and subtraction. Also
students will improve their addition and subtraction skills by practicing problems. Students will work in
groups of 2-3.

Curriculum Framework/Standard: Michigan K-12 Standards Mathematics: (Page 21)


“Mentally add 10 or 100 to a given number 100–900, and mentally
Subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100–900.”

Learning Objectives:
o Students will be able to develop fluent addition and subtraction skills.
o Students will be able to recognize the need for addition and subtraction.
o Students will be able to apply their prior knowledge of methods on how to add and subtract.

Technology Uses:
 Smart Board
 IPads
 Projector/ Monitor

Materials:
 Paper
 Pencils/ Markers
 White boards

Procedure:
1. Students will review in class basic subtraction and addition via power point on monitor.
2. Next students will come up to the smart board and answer practice problems given by teacher.
3. After students will break into groups of 2 or 3.
4. Student one will write a practice problem on the white board.
5. Students 2 and 3 will race each other to solve the problem on their own sheet of paper.

6. Whoever wins then gets to create the next practice problem.

Assessment:
 I will observe my students white boards to make sure they have appropriate problems and
are switching between addition and subtraction to get a good understanding of each.
 I will make sure my students are not cheating by using calculators and make sure they are
doing math mentally.
