measures at Quilon Co-operative Spinning Mills operating under the state
government. As all workers are entitled to work in an environment where risks to
the health and safety are properly controlled, health and safety is a major concern
for the employer in the organisation . It is one of the basic need of every individual.
The findings of the study may help to adopt a necessary corrective measures
regarding health and safety maintanence in the organisation.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

 To study the health and safety measures provided to the employees of
Quilon Co-operative Spinning Mills
 To analyse on the effectiveness of such measures for the employees
 To analyse the areas of improvement required with special emphasis on
health and safety.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Manpower is a major asset for every organisation. Every employee you would like
to work in a safe and healthy working conditions. Enduring a safe and healthy work
environment is the primary responsibility of every employer. Manpower is the
most essential resource of an organisation. If appropriate human resource is not

important factor for the present condition.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Review of literature referred to a thorough review and survey of related

literature. It deals with the critical examination of various published words related
to the present study.
Shouji Nagashima, Yasushi Suwazono, Yasushi Okubo, Mirei Uetani (2007)- The aim
was to clear clarify the influence of working hours on both mental and physical
symptoms of fatigue and use the date of time to determine permissible working
hours. The survey of day shift male workers using the Self Rating Depressions Scale
(SRDS)and Cmulative Fatigue Symptoms Index (CFSI). A total of 715 workers
participated in the group who works 280 hours per month. The research clarified
that working hours should be less than 260 hours per month in order to minimise
fatigue symptoms in male day workers.
David E Cantor (2008)- The purpose of this paper was to review the literature and
call for additional research into human, operational and regulating issues that
contribute to workplace safety in the supply chain.
F David Pearce (May 2008)- Safety is an integral part of the system, woven into
each managenment competency and a party of everyone's day to day
responsibilities.
Shrivastava (2008)- He argues that perceived adequacy or inadequacy of work
environment both physical and psychosocial exchange noticeable effect on
employee job satisfaction performance and the perception of effectiveness of an
organisation. Productivity is an important factor in every organisation. The term
work environment is used in stress research to incorporate psychosocial
dimensions as well as employer-employee relations, motivation and advancement,
job demands and social support.
Barber (2001)- Undertaking a study to ascertain factors that affect employees
productivity found that aspects regarding technology, storage space, quite space,
climate control, personalizing the world space and itz visual appeal were the most
important factors. Research indicates that improving the work environment
reduces complaints and absenteeism while increasing productivity.
Wells(2000)- Work place satisfaction has been associated with job satisfaction.
Studies show the link between employee health and aspects of the physical
environment at work such as indoor air quality, ergonomic furniture and lighting
(Dilani, 2004; Milton, Glencross & Walters; Veitch & Newsham, 2000)
Rahul Wadke(June 12, 2008)- Experts have noted that though India has safety
standards and regulations, its implementation is deficient. A good safety track
record helps to build Image and Goodwill among different stakeholders.
Sandy Moretz (November 2015)- Repetitive trauma injuries related to computer
use, respiratory illness stemming from indoor air quality and high levels of stress
are caused.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

Manpower is the most essential resource of any organisation. If appropriate human
resources and not available, no business organisation can exist. Employees are the
means of success of accomplishment of an organisation and objectives. Health and
safety measures are provided by every organisation and this will play an important
role for increasing the efficiency and skill of the employees. This has a great scope
to develop a sense of responsibility among the employees as it helps to reduce the
industrial conflict.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Methodology

According to Clifford Woody, Research means defining and redefining of problems,

formulating hypotheses, collecting, organising and evaluating data and making
deductions and research conclusion and at last carefully testing the conclusion to
determine whether they are in accordance with the formulation of hypothesis.

Research Design
Research Design is a detailed blueprint used to guide a research study towards its
objective. It is a planned structure and strategy of Investigation concerned as to
obtain research questions. The plan is the outline of research scheme on which the
resource is to work.

Sampling Method
Simple random sampling method has been adopted to collect the requisite data.
Simple random sampling is the foundation of probability sampling. It is a special
case of probability sampling in which every unit in the population has the same
chance of being selected.

Sample Size
The study sampling size taken is 100. The sample area selected for the study was
'Quilon Co-operative Spinning Mill, Chathannoor'.

DATA COLLECTION
Primary and secondary data was collected for the purpose of the study.
Primary data
The primary data can be obtained either through direct communication with
respondents in one form or another through personal interview. Here primary data
was obtained through questionnaire and direct interview with managers and other
employees.
Secondary data
Secondary data is collected from company brochures, manuals, internet journals
related to the topic of the study.
Period of study
The study was undertaken for a period of 15 days.

LIMITATIONS
 Time limitation was a major constraint on successful completion of in-depth
study.
 In some working units, the rotational shift of the employees remain as a
major limitation in collection of data.
 The chances of personal prejudices were greater among the respondents.
 As employees where very busy on their work, itwas not an easy task to collect
the data from them during the working hours.
