2. Unit Description
The second unit of this course on Theoretical Linguistics is focused on the minimal components of language; in this case phonemes, morphemes and
phrases. Along this unit, students will be aware of important characteristics that will help them to be more effective in their English classes.
3. Competences related to the Unit
Cognitive Competencies:
• Identify the segmental and suprasegmental features of English phonetics.
• Recognizes word patterns and their function.
• Distinguish the different grammatical categories and their function in a sentence.
Procedural Competencies:
• Employs suprasegmental features within its discourse.
• Employs the rules of morphology for the formation of derived and inflected words.
• Organize the words within the sentence as its syntactic function within it.
• Use strategies analyzing information such as concept maps, flowcharts, etc., to facilitate understanding and analysis of the issues addressed.
• Effectively uses various strategies of collaborative learning.
 Apply various strategies that significantly contribute to learning content.
Attitudinal Competencies:
• Accept the corrections given by the teacher and / or peers and learn from them.
• Demonstrate responsibility and commitment to learning.
• Predisposes time for conducting class activities and other academic assignments.
Methodological Competencies:

• Use time and resources properly to develop each task proposed, considering that being a virtual learning depends on itself.
Technological Competencies:
• It makes use of technological tools provided by the virtual classroom and other identified by the tutor in the learning process and to build
knowledge with others.
Communicative Competencies:
Reading:
• Collect the key concepts extracted from the reading of texts. .
• Prepares arguments from the consultation of information sources in the context of a particular situation.
• Develops conceptual and mind maps to show in academic forums interpretation of the text.
Writing:
• Make proper use of syntactic and morphological structures within texts.
• Develops reviews on texts consulting and communicating peers.
• Build argumentative and purposeful type tests related to the topics covered.
• Use standard writing and style of video-conferencing, virtual forum, chat, email, video conferencing and other ICT applications used in the course.
• Writes coherent paragraphs with topic or course sessions.
In listening:
• Identifies key points in a conversation and give answers in accordance with these.
Serving others critically and analytically and provides academic dialogues.
