This is a story about an old house and the people

who lived in it. The story begins long ago, when the

house was new. In those earlier days,

life was more difficult than it is today. That first family

did not often travel long distances.

There were no cars for transportation,

and the roads were not paved. The

members of the family were customers at the local stores. There was no

telephone, so the family wrote letters to friends far away. The story continues in modern

times and tells about the new family that lives in the old house.

Write a few sentences to tell what you think you might learn about the present-
day family that lives in the house. Use at least two of the words from the box above.

Once a house stood on a hill. It was a new house then. Who lived in the house? A
mother, a father, and five children lived there. The children slept in the attic, which was
sweltering hot in the summer. In the harsh winter months the water froze in the jug by
their washbowl. The
children kept warm in their
beds under downy piles of
quilts. They laughed and
chatted and told stories by
the light of a dim lantern.
How did the family get
around? When the town
installed a trolley line, the
trolley became their
transportation. Earlier, they
had mostly walked. To

travel far, they rode in a horse-drawn carriage. Most roads were not paved then and
were often muddy or dusty. The trolley made it easy to get to the local stores.
How did the family communicate?
Telephones were new then, and they did
not have one. To send messages long
distances, they had to write letters or, for
an urgent matter, send a telegram.
What did the children do? They
helped with the chores around the house.
They played tag in the yard and hide-and-
seek in the rooms of the house. They
wrote funny verses in each other’s
autograph books.
One day a photographer from town
took a photograph of the family in front
of the house. They had to stand very still.
They proudly hung the photograph on
their parlor wall. They cherished their
house, which sheltered and protected
them.

Graphic Sources

In a story, sometimes the text is not enough when we want to explain something, in
that case, it is helpful to show information in other ways than words. These sources of
information are called graphic sources, or just graphics. Graphic sources include such
things as graphs, charts, diagrams, and time lines.

Look at the two graphics below. Think about the kinds of information each one
gives.

A reflector

wheel spokes

gear chain

B
How Grade 4 Gets to School

They are calling Helping Verbs because they help the main verbs to change into

other tenses.

Helping Verbs come before main verbs, but sometimes another word comes
between main and Helping Verbs.
Example: I can play tennis very well, but I can hardly play volleyball.

Look at the HELPING VERBS in the fire engine!

do/ does
did
am is are was were
Can
will would
could
should
have/has had

Look at the sentences written with HELPING VERBS!

The words written in black are the Helping Verbs, and the underlined words are
the main verbs.

This fire engine is used for major fires. (Passive Voice, es usado)
It could easily hold twenty firefighters.
The driver has developed great skill. (PresentPerfect, ha desarrollado)
He will always find the quickest route. (Future)
The other firefighters do trust his good sense.
A gas line hasexploded. (Present Perfect)

The firefighters areworking hard. (Present Continuous)
I hope they canput out the fire.
If they don’t, buildings willburn down. (Future)

We use do/does/did in affirmative sentences to emphasize something.

Use the Helping Verbs from the box and a form of the verb in parenthesis to
complete the following sentences. Be careful with the verb tenses! Reread ALL the
examples above!

am is are was were will can should would

1. I think, I will go to the dentist tomorrow (go)

2. Good wines are make in France. (make)

Liceo Naval “Almirante Guise”
We use the helping verb have or has (for he, she, it), and the main verb of the
sentence in the past participle to form the Present Perfect.

Helping Verb

Example: She has played tennis since she was 8.

Main Verb (participle)

We use for, and since to say exactly when this action happened in the past.

ten years she came back

two weeks April
half an hour last year
FOR ages SINCE Christmas
a long time 8 o’clock
a few seconds I was a child
some minutes she was two

FOR + Period of Time

SINCE + a point in time

We use the Present Perfect Tense in three different cases:

1.- Unfinished past
The Present Perfect is used to express an action that began in the past and still
continues.
Example: I’ve(have) been a teacher since 1991.(I’m still a teacher)
He’s (has) had that car for many years. (He still has the same old car)

NEVER SAY: I am a student for seven years. WRONG!!!

24
Este material educativo es para uso exclusivo de los alumnos del Programa de Educación a Distancia del
Liceo Naval “Almirante Guise”
2.- Experience
The Present Perfect is used to express an action which happened in the past and is
finished, but we are not interested in when. We are interested in the experience as part
of someone’s life. It is most used to ask about someone’s experience.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A CAR CRASH?

YES, I HAVE.

NOTE: If in the answer is giving an exact date, the tense changes to the Past Simple
and the Past Continuous. Look at the example:
Have you ever had a car accident?
Yes, I have,
When did it happen? (past simple)
In 1979. I was driving down a road when a car came out in front of me.(past
continuous)

3.- Present Result

a) The Present Perfect refers to a past action and shows the result of that action in
the present.
Examples: The taxi has arrived. (It’s outside the house now.)
I have recovered from my illness. (I’m better now)
She has broken her leg. (That’s why she can’t walk)

b) It is common to introduce news in the Present Perfect, because the speaker is

emphasizing the event as a present fact.
Example:Have you heard? A bomb has exploded in the downtown.

Again, if more details are given, the tense changes:

The bomb exploded in the morning. There were many dead people.

He/she/it has eaten many candies for hours.

Has he/she/it eaten many candies for hours?
No, he/she/it hasn’t eaten many candies for hours.

Now, it’s time to reread the story “One House, two Families” and find

Pearl looked around glumly. She had worked hard to make her bed and bookshelf
neat and tidy, but she still felt worried. She had never had to share with anyone before.
“Your new stepsister will be your sister
for ever,” Mom said. “You’ll get to like
sharing with her when she visits each
summer.”
“Every summer!” Pearl said to herself
irritably. “That’ll be a real pleasure.”
All the way to the airport to meet La
Verne’s plane, Pearl tried to ignore the
situation. She was just getting used to having
a stepfather, and now she had to get used to having a stepsister, too.
When La Verne walked off the plane, Pearl gave her a weak smile. La Verne wore
her curly hair long with a bow. Pearl kept her hair short for sports. La Verne looked like
a girl with very different interests from hers. How would the two of them ever get
along?
Pearl did not feel more hopeful when her stepsister unpacked her things. First La
Verne put a stuffed toy cat next to
Pearl’s baseball mitt. Then she
cluttered the tidy shelf with her books
and the rest of her possessions.
Pearl’s disposition changed. She
didn’t feel happy anymore. She felt that
La Verne was imposing on her. Pearl
didn’t want to be mean, but she
couldn’t help feeling a grudge.
La Verne seemed no happier with

the situation than Pearl. At dinner, the girls started to bicker. They both looked angry
and sad.
Pearl’s stepfather tried to cheer them up. “This summer will be fun,” he said. “I like
having my two girls together. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find you like some of the
same pastimes.”
The girls just frowned and looked down at their plates. They had to be sisters
forever, but they didn’t have to like it.
The next morning Pearl got up early while La Verne was still sleeping. She glared
at La Verne and her possessions, and then she sneaked out. Her parents would want her
to take La Verne to meet her friends. Pearl had no such plans. She ate quickly and left,
intending to ignore La Verne.
Pearl Played
soccer with her
friends all morning.
At lunchtime she
went home feeling
bad. Sneaking out on
La Verne had been
mean. Now Mom
might make her stay
home all afternoon
and play with La Verne and her stuffed toys.
When Pearl reached her yard, she was surprised to find La Verne kicking a soccer
ball around.
“I didn’t know you liked sports,” Pearl
said. “You brought so many books with you,
I figured you just liked to read.”
“I do like to read,” La Verne said, “but I
have other interests, too. At home. I play
sports every day.”
“I liked sports,” Pearl said, “and I like to
read, too. At school I tutor the first graders in
reading.”

“You can read my books if you want to”, said La Verne. “Do you like to play board
games?”
“Yes, I do”, said Pearl. “I guess your dad was right. We do have some pastimes we
both like.”
“I guess parents can be right once in a while,” La Verne joked, and they both
laughed.
For the first time, the girls gave each other a real smile. The situation was not so
bad after all. It began to look as if being sisters forever could turn out to be a real
pleasure.

Pearl’s mother said: “Your new stepsister will be your sister forever.”
This statement can be proved to be true. It is a FACT.

La Verne looked like a girl with very different interests from hers.
This statement cannot be proved. It tells what someone feels or believes to be true. It is
an OPINION.

It is important to know if an author is stating facts or opinions. Then you can

decide what to believe about what you read. If you are reading for information, you
would expect to find mostly facts. Newspaper reports, for example, should state only
facts.

Here you can see a chart of facts and opinions, so that you can see the difference.
Remember always to ask yourself: “can this be proved?”

If you tell a friend about “Sisters Forever,” you might say:

A girl was a bit worried because her new stepsister was going to live with her
during the summer; besides, she had to share her room with her, she thought
they had nothing in common and that they wouldn’t get along, but she was
wrong, at the end of the story they became friends.

When you retell just the main events of a story, you are summarizing. A summary
of a story is much shorter than the original.
When you retell everything in a sentence or paragraph in your own words, you are
paraphrasing. A paraphrase is about as long as the original.
It is helpful to summarize and paraphrase as you read. It helps you think about and
understand what you have read.

Choose four sentences from “Sisters Forever,” and paraphrase them, this
means that you have to rewrite them but in your own words.

1.

2.
