How to Have Your Youth Renewed (Psalm 103:5) 

… who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the 
eagle's. (Psalm 103:5; NIV; emphasis mine) 
In Psalm 103:5, the psalmist alluded to having his youth renewed like the eagle’s. 
Interestingly, the psalmist also alluded to his life being in bad shape prior to this experience.  
Indeed, in verse 4, the text “redeems your life from the pit” suggests that the psalmist felt that 
his life was once in one.  
Then, in verses 9‐10, the psalmist alluded to falling in that pit due to his own sin and iniquity.  
Eventually though, when the psalmist restored the fear of God in his life, the Lord forgave him 
(verse 12) and had compassion on him (verse 13). 
There are other text in Scripture that warn us how sin and disobedience can sap us of our 
vitality: 
For my life is spent with sorrow And my years with sighing; My strength has failed 
because of my iniquity, And my body has wasted away. (Psalm 31:10; NASB) 
Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the 
trees of the land will not yield their fruit. (Leviticus 26:20; NASB) 
They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no 
one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand up before your enemies. 
(Leviticus 26:37; NASB) 
If you presently liken your life to being in a pit, here are the actions which Scripture suggests 
you take to get out of it: 
1. Recognise that God is the source of one’s strength 
Isaiah 40:29 (NASB):  He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He 
increases power. 
Isaiah 41:10 (NASB):  ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I 
am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My 
righteous right hand.’  
1 Chronicles 29:12 (NASB):  Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, 
and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to 
strengthen everyone.  
Philippians 4:13 (NASB):  I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.  
2. Although what one may desire most is immediate restoration of physical vitality, 
recognise that the process of restoration begins with one’s inner man 
Ephesians 3:16 (NASB):  That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be 
strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man 
3. Hence, repent from any known sin, humble yourself, seek the Lord, and be prayerful 
Isaiah 30:15a (NASB):  For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said, “In 
repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength.” But you 
were not willing,  
Psalm 10:17 (NASB):  O Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen 
their heart, You will incline Your ear 
Psalm 105:4 (NASB):  Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually.  
James 5:13 (NIV):  Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. 
4. Be patient. As much as one might like to get out of a rut immediately, oftentimes, one’s 
circumstances improve only gradually. The process of restoration may be slow and 
painstaking, but one is commanded to remain “quiet” and to “wait for the Lord”   
Isaiah 40:31 (NIV):  Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount 
up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become 
weary.  
Isaiah 30:15a (NASB):  For thus the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said, “In 
repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength.” But you 
were not willing, 
5. While waiting, one can build up strength by being joyful – as unnatural (humanly‐
speaking) as this may seem, given the circumstances 
Nehemiah 8:10 (NASB):  Then he said to them, “Go, eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and 
send portions to him who has nothing prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be 
grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”  
Habakkuk 3:17‐19 (NIV):  Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the 
vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep 
in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my 
Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he 
enables me to tread on the heights.  
Psalm 70:4 (NIV):  But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long 
for your saving help always say, “The Lord is great!”  
 Philippians 4:4‐9 (NIV):  Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your 
gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in 
every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
