4th Grade Learning Buddies – You
may have heard we did 4th grade
Friday! The first week we got to
know each other and created
portraits of ourselves & our
buddies. We will do a variety of
activities throughout the year
together such as reading activities,
seasonal art projects, math
pentathlon games, and more!

Reading/Language Arts
In Language Arts our learning targets this week have included:
*review of the letters Ww, Yy, Zz, and Qq and their beginning and ending
sounds.
*vowel sound “u”
*Sight word review
*blending sounds
*recognizing complete sentences! They include nouns (person, place, thing,
or animal) verbs (action words), adjectives (describing words), and a capital
& period!
*Background Knowledge – understanding is increased when we know
something about what we are reading. This weeks story was about a
farmer’s market. Most kids had background knowledge because of our
wonderful Holland Farmer’s Market!
Baggie Books is going well and our Mom’s/Volunteers are wonderful!
Special Note: This week completed week 6 in our reading curriculum.
This is significant because we take a unit assessment at the end of every six
weeks on the skills learned to that point! TODAY, Friday is our first one! I
will provide you with the results at confenrences!
Math
This week our learning targets have included:
*writing addition/subtraction equations
*representing addition/subtraction equations with picture/dot drawings
*counting all/counting on in addition equations
We switched on Thursday from addition to subtraction equations. The
most difficult part of the switch is writing the equation and remembering to
start with the BIG number. Because some of the numbers are crossed out
(representing what is subtracted) students want to write an equation with
the not crossed out number and the crossed out number.

Science Kindness
