Preface

Be Connected is an English course book designed for grade X students of senior high
school. This book is speaking supplementary materials for reinforcement purposes that
can be learned individually by the students outside the classroom. It was designed by
referring to the English curriculum in Curriculum 2013 for Senior High School and
students’ needs.

Be connected consists of three units and every unit has:

Let’s Start: it aims to activate students’ schema which is related to the topic and to
prepare them for the main lesson.
Pronunciation: it consists of pronunciation of some keywords that will be useful in
learning the lesson.
Let’s Listen: it aims to give the students the authentic example of the conversation
using the expression they are going to learn in full context.
Language Focus: it consists of the expressions and the explanation that the students
need to know in order to master the lesson.
Grammar: it provides the structure and explanation about some language features
related to the materials. In addition, the exercise also available to check the students’
understanding.
Let’s Practice: it consists of several tasks which are designed to prepare the students
before they practice to speak with other students.
Let’s Speak: it consists of several tasks which lead the students to speak with other
students to practice what they have learned.
Let’s Speak More: it aims to give chance to the students to practice more on what they
have learned of the whole unit.
Reflection: it aims to measure students’ achievement by recognizing their own
success and lack in learning the materials in the unit.

Be connected is integrated with http://edmodo.com. Therefore, sometimes, the students

need to access Edmodo in order to finish the task, including the recordings for the
listening practice. There is tutorial on how to use Edmodo in the appendix in case the
students need it. By learning from Be Connected, the students are expected to develop
their speaking skill more.

Read these two texts and answer the questions.

Text 1

I am Denis. I have a cousin named Elisa. Elisa’s age is the same as mine. Elisa is
good at playing badminton. Sometimes, I have match with Elisa.

Text 2

I am Denis. I have a cousin named Elisa. Her age is the same as mine. She is
good at playing badminton. Sometimes, I have match with her.

1. What is the difference between text 1 and text 2?

2. Why text 2 is shorter than text 1?
3. Who does the word ‘She’ and ‘her’ in text 2 refer to?

Study this following explanation.

The word I, She, and her in both texts above are called pronouns. Pronoun is a
word that replaces a noun in a sentence. There are several types of pronouns: subjective,
objective, and possessive pronouns. It is also important to learn possesive adjectives when
learning these forms. To make it clear, read the following table and explanation.

Possessive Possessive
Subjective Objective
Adjective Pronoun
I me my mine
you you your yours
we us our ours
they them their theirs
he him his his
she her her hers
it it its ---

1. Subjective Pronouns
A subjective pronoun acts as the subject of a sentence. It performs the action
of the verb. Read these following examples.
Be Connected | For Grade X 7

Hi, my name is Hana. I have three brothers. They are Dodi, Nunu, and
Nanda. Dodi is a doctor. He checks people’s health everyday. We have the
same hobby which is singing.

2. Objective Pronouns
An objective pronoun acts as the object of a sentence. It receives the action of
the verb. Read these following examples.

My second brother is Nunu. He is a music teacher. He can play piano,

saxophone, drum, and violin. He can play them well. He is the one who
taught me how to play violin.

3. Possessive Adjective
Possessive adjective is not a pronoun, but rather a determiner. It is useful to
learn it at the same time as pronouns because it is similar to the possessive pronouns.
Possessive adjective functions as adjective, so they appear before the noun they
modify. They don’t replace a noun as a pronoun do. Read these following examples.

My third brother is Nanda. Our birthday date is the same, June 15th.
His hobby is playing video game. Sometimes, he borrows my laptop and play
games on it.

4. Possessive Pronouns
A possessive pronoun replaces possessive noun as either the subject or the
object of the sentence. Read these following examples.

This is my family photo. The car in this picture is not ours. Ours looks
like this car but the colour is white. How about yours?

Complete the paragraph below using proper pronouns.

Study the explanation.

Expressions to ask for intention
What are you going to do?
Do you have any plan for…?
Are you thinking of…?
Do you have any intention of…?
Is it your intention to…?

Is there any other expressions to ask for intention you know? What are they?
Expressions to tell intention
I’m going to…
I’m planning to…
I’ll make effort to…
I’m thinking of…
I would like to…
I have intention to…
It is my intention to…

Is there any other expressions to tell intention you know? What are they?

Study the following explanation.

In expressing intention, we use going to rather than will. Look at the difference
in the following table.
Will Going to
- We use will when we are talking - We use going to when we are
about activities to do at the time talking about activities to do that
of speaking we already decided before.
- It have not decided before

Therefore, in this chapter we will learn the structure of going to.

S + to be + going to + simple form of the verb

In the formula above, we need to be before the word going.
