Do Now
Students are provided a thematic map and key for precipitation in the United States. Students are asked to
answer 3 warm-up questions about the map and legend (What is the title? What three precipitation zones

Explore

Introduction to New Material: Students are lead through a guided notes activity and discussion on the proper
way to use thematic maps.

Teach the concept. (interaction, investment, interest.)


Explain

Clarification: Students are provided examples of thematic maps and asked to complete a “think-aloud”
discussing titles, keys (legends), and content of each map in further detail.

Students apply the information learned in the “explain” portion


Elaborate

Students complete a think, pair, share activity. Two thematic maps are provided (Texas Population Density
and Texas Household Median Income by County). Students are asked to work with a partner to answer a
series of content-based and skills-based questions.

Reflection, check for understanding


Evaluate

Students complete a thematic map exit quiz containing 3 content-based questions and 3 skills-based
questions.

MODIFICATION

GT: Map assessments based on TODALS lesson.


ESL: Guided learning, oral directives.
Sp. Ed: Oral administration of exit quiz based on IEP requirements. Further review.
