LESSON GUIDE IN EARTH SCIENCE

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
1. Geologic processes that occur within the Earth.
B. Performance Standards
1. Using maps, diagrams, or models, predict what could
happen in the future as the tectonic plates continue to
move.
C. Learning The learners:
Competencies/Objectives 1. Describe what happens after magma is formed.
1.1 Differentiate volcanic process from plutonic
process;
1.2 explain other landforms formed and materials
formed from the magma; and
1.3 appreciate the beneficial effects of the solidified
magma.

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous lesson or Review on how magma is formed.
presenting new lesson
(REVIEW) Show to the students the picture below and ask the students the
following questions:
1. What part of the earth is the magma formed?
2. What are the factors affecting on the formation magma
on that part?

B. Establishing a purpose of the Engage the students with the game “Four Pics, One Word.”
lesson (MOTIVATION) They will have to guess the word that has been depicted by the
given set of pictures.

The following are the words that can be used for the motivation:
1. Mantle
2. Pressure
3. Lava
4. Volcano
5. Etc.

The teacher will prepare something to be given to the learner

who will be able to guess the word as a form of reward.

C. Presenting
examples/instances of the Show the students the picture as shown below:
new lesson (PRE-ACTIVITY)

Guide Questions:
1. What is this picture all about?
2. What are the materials usually coming out from it?
3. What do you think will happen to the materials after
coming out from the volcano?
D. Discussing new concepts Show a video to the students about what happens to the magma
and practicing new skills 1 after it was formed.
(ACTIVITY PROPER)
Guide questions:
1. What is volcanism?
2. How do volcanism and plutonism differ from each
other? How are they alike?

Divide the students into several groups (depending on the

number of students taught). Tell the students to make a Venn
Diagram to illustrate how volcanism and plutonism differ from
each other? How are they alike?

E. Discussing new concepts Analysis on the concepts:

and practicing new skills 2 1. Explain how volcanism and plutonism as processes of
(DEEPENING) the formation of intrusive and extrusive rocks.
2. What are the landforms formed from the magma? (Lava
Flows, Shield Volcanoes, Cinder Cones, Composite
Cones, Plug Domes and Calderas)
3. How do solidified magmas differ from each other?
(Batholith, Laccolith, Sill and Dike).

- Batholiths are complex masses of solidified magma,

usually granite.
- Laccolith is a mushroom-shaped intrusion that develops
where molten magma pushes its way between pre-
existing horizontal layers of other rock.
- Sill is a solidifying magma into a horizontal sheet of
igneous rock.
- Dike is a solidified magma into a nonhorizontal fracture
that cuts across the surrounding rocks.
F. Developing mastery (POST Show to the students this picture below. Tell to the students
ACTIVITY) about what the picture illustrates.

(As the magma goes up, it tends to form volcanoes. This is

possible due to the movement of plates above asthenosphere).
G. Finding practical applications The teacher will ask the following questions:
of concepts and skills in daily 1. Will you think that magma has a beneficial effect to us?
living (APPLICATION) Support your answer.
H. Making generalizations and Based on the objectives stated previously, ask the following
abstractions about the lesson questions:
(GENERALIZATION)
1. What happens to the magma once it comes out from the
interior part of the earth?
2. How are plutonic and volcanic processes related in
terms for their results after the magma is formed?
I. Evaluating Learning Tell the students to answer the following question:
(ASSESSMENT) 1. How do plutonic differ from volcanic processes?

The concept will be assessed using the rubrics below:

5 points- Excellent- the students responses far exceed what is
expected.
4 points- Very good- information is factually accurate and offers
extra supporting facts.
3 points- Good- the student somewhat responds beyond the
basic level of the question to provide supporting details and or
interpretations.
2 points- Fair- student responses, although somewhat correct
but lacking in relevant details and supporting examples and or
interpretations.
1-point- Not Mastered- student responses are largely incorrect.

J. Additional Activities for Research from the internet about the different volcanoes that
application or remediation recently erupted in the Philippines. Have a picture on the
(REMEDIAL) released magma formed and describe what happened to it now.
