The lateral line system consists of a series of heavily
innervated small canals located in the skin and bone
around the eyes, along the lower jaw, over the head, and
down the mid‐side of the body, where it is associated with
the scales. Intermittently along these canals are located
tiny sensory organs (pit organs) that apparently detect
changes in pressure. The system allows a fish to sense
changes in water currents and pressure,

Fish Endocrine
Fish have an endocrine system, and it consists of a pituitary gland,
thyroid gland, adrenal gland, Corpuscles of Stannius, Ultimobranchial
glands, urohypophysis, pancreatic islet, and a pineal gland
In the pituitary, there are hormones that are released. Those
hormones are TSH, released by thyrotropins, and that regulates
growth of the thyroid and the release of T3, T4, and calcitonin.
The hormones LH and FSH are triggered by gonadotrophs and
regulate “gonadal hormones, spermogenesis, and oogenesis”
Then there is GH (Growth hormone) which is triggered by
somatotrophs, increases the growth and BMR (basal metabolic
rates) of the fish body.
Prolactin is triggered by lactotrophs and is released to help with
osmoregulation and melanogenesis.
Then there are corticotrophs that trigger ACTH to go to the
adrenal glands to regulate corticotropin from the adrenal glands.
MSH and MCH regulate pigmentation and melanophores in the
skin and body.
Vasopressin and oxytocin regulate salt water balance, osmoregulation,
and mating/laying eggs
The thyroid secrets thyroxine and that helps with osmoregulation,
scale and bone development, migration, and maturation, among
others
Adrenal gland is separate. Its cortex and medulla are in two
separate places, not together. The adrenal glands are responsible
for cortisol secretion, water metabolism, and sodium retention.
The Corpuscles of Stannius (attached to or inside kidneys)
secretes hypocalcin and regulates calcium balance in the body.
The ultimobranchial glands secrete calcitonin and regulates
calcium levels in the body.
The urohypophysis (end of the spinal cord) secretes urotensins
and is in control of metabolic regulation.
The pancreatic islets (located in gut walls) secrete insulin and
take care of the carbohydrates metabolism.
The pineal gland secretes melatonin and controls photosensory/
secretory functions.
The chromaffin tissue has chromaffin cells that secrete epinephrine,
norepinephrine, and dopamine. It is located in the adrenal glands
