First Grade News

October 11-15, 2010

What we’re learning
Our Bible stories for this week are Jesus and Nicodemus and Jesus and the Samaritan
Woman. Jesus came to be the Savior of all people!
We are starting our basal reading books! Our stories are “The Nap” and “Oh, Cats”.
We are focusing on short “a” words and identifying beginning and ending consonant
sounds. In math we are learning our doubles (1+1, 2+2, etc.), working with shapes, and
creating addition sentences. During Writing Workshop we are writing small moment
stories by taking a small highlight of an event and stretching it out across several
pages. In science we are continuing our study of plants and how they grow.

Assignments
Your child will be bringing home a reading book to read aloud to you. Please help your
child figure out the words on his/her own by using the following questions:
• What looks right? Ex. Does the word begin/end with the sound you said?
• What sounds right...like everyday language?
• What makes sense?
Also, encourage your child to use the pictures to figure out the words. Sounding out a
word is one way to determine an unknown word. Thinking about what makes sense, and
the shape/length of the word is just as valuable. Please don’t use just one of the
questions above, but all of them. A child learns to read effectively by using all of
these methods.
Furthermore, your child will bring home a bookmark that should stay in the basal
reading book. He/she will write the pages to be read at home. Please sign the
bookmark by the page numbers. This will let me know if the assignment was completed.
At the end of each quarter, if all basal reading assignments are completed and signed
your child will receive a prize. Thank you for your work at home with this.
You will notice that there is no Christ Light story to read on Wednesday. We will
complete that in class.
Also, this week a few challenge spelling words will be included.
They are completely optional. Please make sure the main spelling words are learned
well before learning the challenge words.

Important Notes
• A Book It reading log will be coming home. If your child reads 18 books at home
during this month of October, he/she gets a certificate for a free personal pan
pizza at Pizza Hut! Simply fill out the log with your child and have him/her bring it
to school to receive the certificate. This is a great way to motivate and encourage
your child in his/her reading.
• Our Reformation Service is on October 31st. Look to see if there are any
conflicts with the service your child is scheduled for. Please let me know so
arrangements can be made.
• We are collecting books for the Used Book Fair coming up in November. Our
classroom has a box you can drop off your books.
