Abstract
The larger slave mobility that characterized great urban centers, allowed
the widening slave autonomy to manifest also through living arrangements,
creating to the slave the practice of living by himself. According to this
practice the slaves did not have to live in the master’s house. The present
paper intends to examine the ways in which the Brazilian Nation-State dealt
with this practice in Rio de Janeiro, in order to understand up to what point
the State legislated over slave autonomy.
