Objective:
Students will learn to write complete sentences

Day 1: Basic rules of a sentence


A. First, I will explain that we will learn about sentences.
1.Sentences allow you to convey messages, but in order to do that you have to remember a few
rules.
B. Watch YouTube video

This video explains that sentences start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark
C. Expand on ending punctuation
D. Group activity:
1. As a class, we will look at sentences that have correct beginning capitalization and ending
punctuation. Then, we will look at some sentences without capitalization and punctuation, and
we will fix them.
2. I will split the kids into pairs, and they will all have a sentence to fix. Maybe I'll make it a
contest and see which group can fix the sentence the fastest.
3. Afterward, we will go over the sentences.
E. Individual Practice:
1. The students will have to write one sentence that shows correct beginning capitalization and
ending punctuation.

Day 2: Components of a complete sentence


A. Lecture:
1. A complete sentence needs to have a noun and a verb, and it needs to convey a complete
thought.
a. i.e) The boy rode the bicycle. NOT The boy rode. Because then you are left
wondering, he rode what? Did he ride a horse a bicycle?
B. Explain what a noun and a verb is.
C. Whole group activity/game:
1. Play the game Nouns and Verbs on ABCya.com as a class, so that we can visually see that
sentences are formed with nouns and verbs, and so that we get exposure to longer sentences.

D. Individual Practice:
1. As a class, we will brainstorm nouns and verbs, and write them on the board. Then, using
those nouns and verbs, the students will individually create 1-2 sentences.
a. These sentences can be silly or realistic.
b. i.e) nouns: dogs, Janeth, ant, building verbs: hugged, ran, jumped, ate
The dogs ate the building.

Day 3: Making simple sentences interesting


A. I will begin by showing a simple sentence.
1. i.e) The boy climbed the tree.
B. How can you make it more interesting? How can you make it stand out? What can you add?
1. descriptive words=adjectives
2. more details
a. The small boy climbed the tallest tree at the park.
C. Talk more about adjectives.
1. Give examples and ask for examples of adjectives.
D. Whole group activity:
1. As a class, we will transform a few simple sentences into interesting and descriptive sentences.
E. Individual Practice:
1. The students will write 2 sentences using at least two adjectives or details in each.

Day 4: Applying the knowledge they have learned


A. I will ask them to create a journal entry.
1. For their journal entry they will need to draw a picture of whatever they want. Then, they will
have write a minimum of 3 complete and interesting sentences explaining what their picture is
about.
a. I will demonstrate what they need to do before sending them off to work on their
assignment.
B. Individual Assignment:
1. The students will get 20 minutes to complete their journal entry.
