OTTAWA VALLEY GOODWILL TOUR 2018

David Smith – This fall marks the end of my tour. I normally play
at the Navy and City View curling clubs in Ottawa in the Lead
position. I’ve curled competitively from 1966 to 2006, but other
than a few Bonspiels, never won anything important (except the
Friendship Cup). I’m personally interested in genealogy, lawn
bowls, travelling, and drinking red wine. I look forward to
meeting a new group of curlers this fall.

Diane Smith - OVGT Captain I was an avid curler until we took to

wintering in Arizona. However, the interest in the game has
never waned and I look forward to again taking to the ice in the
Friendship Cup. And while I don’t get much of an opportunity to
curl, I can be found on the golf course 12 months of the year.
With David, I continue to travel, enjoy good food and wine. And
the knitting and crocheting for our little granddaughter, Annabel,
rounds out my profile nicely. I’m ending my tour this year after
surviving Curler’s Court in 2006. We’ve made a lot of good
friends in Scotland and Ottawa through the tour. It has been a
wonderful 14 years..

Norm Murchison I’ve enjoyed travelling to Scotland twice and

participating in the tour over the last 16 years. I have been
curling for almost 50 years. I normally skip games. I enjoy
photography, golf, BBQing, travel, travel blogging with family and
friends, time with family and friends and of course curling! Over
the years, I have curled at 3 Curling Clubs in Ottawa and played in
Spiels all over the Ottawa and St Laurence River valleys. I have
curled in 4 provinces, Ontario, Quebec New Brunswick and
Manitoba as well as Scotland. I've won some and lost some.
What is most important for me however has been the wonderful
people I've met through curling, the friendships I've had the
opportunity to make and the many lifelong friends I've gained
through curling.

Julie Maxted-Murchison I have been an Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour member since 2006. I feel privileged to have met
so many friendly folks from the curling exchange with Renfrewshire 12th Province.
The Royal Canadian Navy Curling Club has been my home club for the past 20 years. Since retirement from the
Canadian Federal Government 11 years ago, I now curl exclusively with our Day Ladies leagues in either the vice or skip
position (getting older = less sweeping 😊). I also participate in many events at other clubs and at special fundraising
spiels around the Ottawa Valley. In addition to curling, I enjoy golf, travel, volunteering and reading.
I very much look forward to welcoming you and the 2018 Scottish Contingent to Ottawa. We are going to have a
GREAT TIME!
OTTAWA VALLEY GOODWILL TOUR 2018

Roger Tétreault It’s my final round of the Ottawa Valley Goodwill

Tour. I prefer to play the Skip position and am an avid member
at the Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa. I am the Past
president of Granite Curling Club. Director of Ottawa Valley
Curling Association. Member of 2012 OVCA Mixed Senior Event
Champions. I also enjoy golfing and travelling. Thoroughly
enjoyed our tours of Scotland and I look forward to welcoming
you to the Ottawa area.

Carol Tétreault During my last visit to Scotland in 2014, I enjoyed

seeing Scots we met on earlier tours and bringing back a Dunoon
Teapot! During the winter you can find me at the Granite Curling
Club of West Ottawa where I enjoy skipping games. I’ve been on
the winning team of various In-Club; Out-of-Club and InterClub
Day Ladies Events, the 2005 Intermediate Women Provincial
Qualifier, 2012 OVCA Mixed Senior Event Champions and am
proud of the fact that my team has scored two Eight-Enders! I’m
quite involved with my club specifically with the Granite Day
Ladies and as Assistant Rink Chair. I am a proud Grandparent to
three (3) boys and two (2) girls.

Sid Webb – OVGT Driving Coordinator This year you’ll find me

organizing drivers throughout the tour. I curl at the City View
Curling Club in the Vice or Second positions. I probably have set
the record for longest career without any major wins - in club or
out! I usually am on the 'happy' team - the one that makes
others 'happy'. I enjoy family - kids (3) and grandkids (4) and
summer lawn bowling and travel. I hope you enjoy your time in
the Ottawa Valley.

Natalie Webb You’ll meet me at the airport when you arrive! I

curl at the Granite Curling Club of West Ottawa in the Vice or
Second positions. I'm a member of a fixed stick curling team. I
enjoy travel, reading, quilting / sewing, lawn bowling and walking
in addition to curling. Sid and I have 3 children and four
grandchildren. I look forward to making new friendships

Maureen (Moe) Broder – Accommodations Coordinator

I’m a newer member of the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour (2014)

Ottawa. I’ve enjoyed some success curling “in-club” and at “out-
of-club” events. We have two grandchildren that we adore and
visit as often as we can. I enjoy curling in the winter and golfing
in the summer. I look forward to reconnecting and renewing
friendships and making new ones along the way on our next tour
to Scotland.

Over the years, I’ve been a finalist in the Men’s Tankard Provincials 1993; winner of the Men’s Intermediate Provincials
1994; winner of the Men’s City of Ottawa Bonspiel 1995; and I’ve enjoyed being an 8-time Men’s Club Champion at the
Granite. I enjoy golfing and coaching competitive curling teams and being the Club Pro at the Granite CC. I look
forward to reconnecting and renewing friendships, making new ones, trying more scotches’, and seeing more of your
beautiful country on the return tour.

Jeff Cumming I’m a member of the Metcalfe Curling Club and

normally play Vice. I’ve curled there for 30 years. I was President
of the club in 2000-2001and was on a club championship team
from 2009-2012. Outside the club I have been on various winning
competitive teams (OCA Dominion Regalia Silver Tankard
champion 2003, City of Ottawa Men's Grand Aggregate winner
2007, and OVCA Mixed Bonspiel Bud Light Trophy winner 2011).
On a personal note, I am a biologist (entomologist) with the
federal government. As part of my research, I regularly conduct
field work with my wife throughout North America, as well as in
the tropics (mainly Costa Rica). I’m a new member of the Ottawa
Valley Goodwill Tour and look forward to socializing, curling and
showing you the Ottawa area.

Sue Cumming I’m a member of the Metcalfe Curling Club and normally play Lead. I have been a member for 30 years
and enjoy all aspects of the game including the social side. I was President of the club from 2007/2008. As far as the
competitive side goes I was part of a mixed team that won an OVCA event in 2011. I have had a number of interesting
jobs over the years mostly contract work. My main focus was my family and we have two grown kids. What I really
enjoy now is collecting flies with my husband Jeff for his research and we have been on some great collecting trips
including two to Costa Rica. I’m a new member of the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour and look forward to meeting all of
you. 2014 was my first trip across the Atlantic. I really enjoyed the tour in Scotland and visiting with the Scottish curlers
we met when they were here in 2010.
OTTAWA VALLEY GOODWILL TOUR 2018

Desirée McLeod I have been curling for many years and

participated in the 2014 tour in Scotland and survived Curler’s
Court. I am currently sitting on the Board of Directors for the
Cornwall Curling Club.

I am retired and enjoy golfing, curling, skiing and biking. I have

two wonderful boys and in February, Angus, my husband of 37
years passed away. I am looking forward to curling with our
Scottish friends in October.

Stuart McKay I’m a member at the Glengarry Curling Club and

normally skip the games but am willing to play any position. I’ve
skipped a senior mixed team to a gold medal in the Ontario
Senior Games in 2011 and represented Ontario in the Canada
Senior Games in Cape Breton. I’m the Past President of the
Glengarry Curling Club (Maxville) and member of the building
committee for the construction of our new curling club in
Maxville. I have played other sports including slo-pitch softball
where I have participated in three provincial and one national
senior mixed competition. I am also involved with our
community and Church where I have been Session Clerk for over
30 years. I was on the building committee to build a new Church
and I currently look after our local cemetery. As a new member
to the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour, I am looking forward to
meeting new people in Scotland and making new friends as well
as seeing part of the country and their curling clubs.

Joan McKay I’m also a member of the Glengarry Curling Club in

Maxville, Ontario. I normally play Vice but I’m willing to play
other positions – just not skip. I have been on a winning
provincial mixed team and participated in the Canada Games in
Cape Breton. I am a retired schoolteacher who loves to travel,
garden, curl, shop and socialize.

Stuart and I have two daughters and three young grandsons. I enjoy spending time with family. As a new member of
the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour, I look forward to meeting new people and curling in new venues. My maternal
grandparents met and married in Glasgow so I am hoping to see/visit some of the spots they would have lived and
worked.
OTTAWA VALLEY GOODWILL TOUR 2018

Harley Melnick I’m a newer member of the Ottawa Valley

Goodwill Tour (2014) and am acquiring a taste for good Scotch as
I prepare for the next event! You can usually find me skipping
games at the North Grenville Curling Club but I enjoy playing any
position. I took up curling in Thunder Bay at the Fort William and
Port Arthur Curling Clubs before moving to Ottawa in 2000. In
2013, my team added a few points to the Canadian tally when
our club played the Scots during the Strathcona Cup. I am
employed with the National Research Council of Canada and
manage a team within Design and Fabrication Services - we build
custom components for flight- based research. This year I’m
building a new house for Laura and I; hope to be finished soon.

Laura Melnick – OVGT Treasurer Like Harley, I too am a newer member of the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour – really
enjoyed our trip to Scotland (2014)! I normally play Vice (or any position) at the North Grenville Curling Club where I’ve
been a league convener, webmaster, and currently the Membership Chair. In 2014, my team placed second in the Lady
Tweedsmere Cup but my proudest curling moment was winning a game in the last end with an 8-ender while playing
with Harley and two of our daughters at a club event. Tough to be that!

Russell Oatman I became a member of the Ottawa Valley

Goodwill Tour in 2012 and loved my first taste of Scotland in
2014. Experiencing the food, drink, culture and hospitality of
Scotland, not to mention the friendships that were made, are
memories that I will always cherish. Here at home, I have been a
member of the Arnprior Curling Club since 2006 and since that
time I have served as the Club President, a Curling Coach,
Director of the bantam curling program, Match Director and
Program Organizer/Lead Instructor of the adult curler mentor
program. On the ice, I have played all positions but have recently
enjoyed playing lead. This past season my competitive team won
our club championship. Aside from curling, I'm an avid
outdoorsman and enjoy both hunting and fishing. I have also
been actively involved in the sport of lawn bowls since 2012 and
currently sit as President of the Galetta lawn bowling club.

Karen Oatman – OVGT Secretary I became a member of the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour in 2012 and had an awesome
time when we visited Scotland in 2014. The sites and the people will be something I will never forget. I’ve been a
member of the Arnprior Curling Club since 2006 and normally play Vice or Second position. In the past I have assisted
in coaching bantam curlers and was one of the instructors for our Club's adult curler mentor program. This past winter
I took up the sport of Pickle Ball. In the summer I lawn bowl and enjoy both hunting and fishing.
OTTAWA VALLEY GOODWILL TOUR 2018

enjoy playing Vice, Second or Lead positions. I’ve played in the
provincial finals of Trophy and Challenge events, participated in
numerous Canadian Branch events, and I am a honorary member
of Alexandria Curling Club. I enjoy reading, knitting, and
gardening. Now aT the end of my Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour, I
look forward meeting new people and showing you our curling
rinks.

Jim Poulton I’m also a member at the Alexandria Curling Club

and enjoy playing Skip, Vice, or Second positions; it doesn’t really
matter as long as I’m curling. I’ve been curling for 30 years and
have won various trophies and bonspiels, and have been
awarded honorary membership at the Alexandria Curling Club.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Ottawa Valley Goodwill Tour
experience, I look forward to meeting new curlers, and of
course… curling!
