Lesson Idea Name: Counting, Counting!

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten

many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in
a scattered configuration; given a number from 1–20, count out that many objects.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Powerpoint offers a variety of creative tools that can be used for teaching and designing. Depending on what
kind of specific aid is needed to meet learning styles - visuals (pictures, shapes, diagrams, etc.), audio
(recordings, inserts, etc.), video – all of these tools can be used to help students who are struggling with
development in a specific area.
Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, I introduce the idea of counting with the first slide. As the students progress through the
presentation, they are asked to count whatever objects they see on the screen. After providing them with a
minute to answer, it shifts to the next slide where they can see the answer (the number spelled out along
with a visual aid that matches the correlating object).
Throughout the presentation, I inserted a recording of myself reading through the slides. This is an aid for
those who are visually impaired, but it can benefit all of the students as they follow along. This is something
that I would probably use during class. I would present it to them as a whole and receive feedback as I watch
each student to see how they are performing. This is obviously not a serious assessment and it would not be
individually graded, but it does allow for great practice and reinforcement of the counting arrayed objects
standard.

Reflective Practice:
To extend this to a higher LoTi level, I would give students the opportunity to find objects in the room that
they could put together to count. This would force them to use critical thinking and relate to something in the

environment that is hands-on. They would then be able to use technology to draw representatives of the
objects and write the appropriate numbers on the board to present them to the class.
