Hello!

I am looking forward to making our time together a fun and enriching experience for all of my
students. I am mainly focused on helping you succeed in your various academic and life goals. I
am looking forward to getting to know all of you and building a community within this
classroom. I am passionate about History, Economics, and Civic Life. I understand that not
everyone is passionate about these things, but my main goal is to show you the importance and
practicality of studying these disciplines. The Social Sciences are important to helping you
develop a perspective through which to analyze and evaluate the world around you.

1) Classroom Expectations
a) There are a set of expectations that students and the instructor will be continually
responsible for during the duration of this course.
(1) I expect students to follow all of the rules and procedures required by the school,
district, state, and federal governments.
(2) Students and the instructor should be committed to using their instructional time
to learn, create a welcoming community, and be respectful of one another.
(3) This class is formatted in a way that makes it possible for every student to earn a
top grade, and I expect all students to participate and exert maximum effort
towards learning at all times.
(4) I expect myself to assist you, to the best of my abilities, in reaching your
educational, career, civic, and personal goals. I expect you to define what those
goals are and evaluate how this class can help you reach those goals. I expect you
to inform me how I can increase the relevancy of this class to your ever changing
lives.
(5) I expect students to improve their knowledge, understandings, and perceptions of
the world around them by using academic learning as a tool for personal growth.
(6) During academic debates, it is inevitable disagreements will occur. Remember,
we are spending a lot of time together and I expect you to treat each other kindly.
I expect all students to engage in disagreements in a manner that consists of
respect and maturity.
(7) In absolutely no situation, is it appropriate to disrespect or marginalize another
student on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs
or otherwise.
(8) As an instructor, I will do make very best to model these behaviors and I expect
students to do the same.
b) What happens when expectations are not met?
i) In the event that classroom expectations are not being met, I will do my best to
resolve the issue.
ii) When necessary, I will involve school administration. However, this is far from my
first preference and I would rather help develop self-regulation among students.
iii) Students will be subjected to disciplinary actions if the instructor determines
expectations are not being met.
c) Final Notes on Expectations
i) I will be considerate of you when presenting ideas or questions, I expect all students
to respect an instructor during the class period.
ii) I will not speak over you or use my phone when you are talking, so you will not be
allowed to do so either.
2) Required Materials
a) Textbook
i) TBA
ii) Students should bring their textbook to class every day.
b) Student’s choice of two pens, either blue or black
i) Avoid bringing other colored pens
c) 1 Three Ring Binder
d) Dividers
e) Paper
3) Grading
a) This course consists of a variety of different in class activities, quizzes, tests, homework,
and projects.
(i) Homework 400 Pts
(ii) Quizzes 200 Pts
(iii) Classwork 500 Pts
(iv) Tests 500 Pts
(v) Study Guides 100 Pts
(vi) Attendance 250 Pts
(vii) Current Events 300 Pts
(viii) Projects 500 Pts
(ix) Work Packets 250 Pts
ii) There will be opportunities for extra credit throughout the semester, and additional
opportunities will be created at the discretion of the instructor.
(1) These may include:
(a) Visiting historical site / 2 page report Maximum 25 pts
(b) Presentation/ Socratic Seminar Maximum 100 Pts *

*Must be discussed with and approved by instructor at least two weeks in advance

b) This course will be graded on a traditional scale.

90-100 % A
80-89 % B
70-79 % C
60-69 % D
50-0 % F
c) Academic Dishonesty
i) The policy of the course will be subject to the guidelines and polices of the school
and district policy
4) Routines and Procedures
a) Tardy Policy
i) Students will be considered Tardy if they are not in their assigned seat when the bell
rings.
ii) Students may be ineligible for daily participation/attendance points if Tardy
iii) Student may not make up in class work missed due to Tardy
b) Absences
i) Absence will be considered in accordance with school and district policies.
ii) Students are responsible for any missed assignments.
iii) Certain assignments will not be eligible for make-up.
(1) Except in the following scenarios
(2) Special circumstances exist
(3) Specific arrangements are made in advance
c) Late Work Policy
i) Tests/Quizzes
(1) Tests and Quizzes made be rescheduled due to excused absence
(a) Students are responsible for communication with instructor to arrange make-
up
(i) In this scenario, Students have a maximum time limit of 1 week to make
up Test/Quiz
ii) Projects
(1) These assignments will not be accepted past the due date.
(2) Unless special circumstances exist or specific arrangements are approved by the
instructor.
iii) Homework
(1) Students are responsible for completing homework assignments individually,
unless directed by instructor to do otherwise
(2) Late work
(a) Will be subjected to a late penalty
(i) 10% Deduction per day late
(b) Unless other agreement is made between the student and instructor
d) Extra Assistance
i) As an instructor, I will create opportunities which allow me to be available for extra
assistance.
(1) Students are always welcome to seek assistance during Tutorial.
(2) I can make specific arrangements with students as necessary.
(3) Students should feel free to ask questions as they arise.
(a) Remember to be respectful to the instructor and peers when asking questions.
Letter to Parents/Guardians

Hello, my name is Mr. Reardon. I will be instructing your student during this course. I
have had a variety of occupational experience, internships in Sacramento, and have been
involved in sports throughout my life. I am interested in helping your child reach success,
whether that is in the college, career, or civic realm. I earned my Undergraduate Degree in
Political Science from California State University, Fullerton. I am currently pursuing a Master’s
In Secondary Education from CSUF as well. I am passionate about the importance of education
as a tool for life success.
My teaching philosophy is focused on developing 21st Century Learners who can develop
into important resources for themselves and their communities. I believe that the student who is
doing the thinking is the student who is doing the learning. I will be incorporating a variety of
activities, assignments, and interactions that challenge students to think in different ways.
I believe that building a community is an integral part of success, so I encourage you to
continue to be involved in your child’s education. I invite you to reach out to me as needed, and
I hope will we be able to interact in instances other than disciplinary actions. I want to offer
various options for communicating with me, so that I can learn more about your student and your
