Directions: In this question two groups of letters separated by the sign (:) are given
to the left and right of the sign (:). There is some kind of relationship between the
two groups of letters to the left of the sign (: ). The same relationship holds true in
case of two groups of letters of which one is missing and is indicated by the mark of
interrogation (?). This missing group of letters is given in one of the five alternatives
underneath the question. Find out that alternative and mark it as your answer.

ABCD : ZYXW :: IJKL : ?

1. OPQR
2. QRST
3. PONM
4. RQPO
5. TSRQ Answer: 4

Rationale: In such type of questions, one is required to find out the relationship
between the two groups of letters/figures/numbers/words to the left of the sign (::) .
After this he/she has to find out which group of letters/figures/numbers/words as
given in the alternative has the same relationship with the group of
letters/figures/numbers/words given to the right of the sign (: ). That alternative is
your answer.

In this question, the two sets of letters are given to the left of the sign (::). We have
the first four alphabets ABCD and their corresponding alphabet starts from Z. Here,
A at serial number 1 corresponds to Z at serial number 26, B at serial number 2
corresponds to Y at serial number 25 and so on. Likewise the alphabets IJKL at
serial numbers 9,10,11 and 12 would correspond to RQPO at serial numbers
18,17,16 and 15.

6.3. Scholastic Aptitude Test Items

This test comprises 100 items, of them, 40 items are from Science, 40 from Social Sciences and
20 from Mathematics. The items that are used in this test aim at measuring the knowledge of the
subject area besides assessing the ability to apply that knowledge to solve new problems.

An example from each subject area is given here. Besides, some practice items
are also provided for the benefit of prospective candidates. They are advised to
attempt the practice items and fine their answers. They may match their answers
with the solutions given at the end of these items.

(A) SCIENCE

Example
Non-metals are generally bad conductors of electricity. However, graphite is a
good conductor of electricity because it
1. is an allotrope of carbon.
2. has loosely bound electrons.
3. is brittle.
4. forms basic oxide. Ans.: 2

Rationale: Alternatives 1, 3 and 4 are true but do not explain conductivity. Only
2 can explain conductivity of graphite.

(B) MATHEMATICS

Example
A man walks a certain distance at a certain speed. Had he walked ½ Km/hr. faster,
he would have taken one hour less. But if he had walked 1 Km/hr. slower, he
would have taken 3 hours longer. The distance travelled by the man is
1. 36 Km.
2. 30 Km.
3. 10 Km.
4. 6 Km. Ans.: (1)

Rationale: Let s be the distance covered with speed x Km/hr. The given problem can be expressed by the
mathematical equations:-

{s/x – s/(x + 0.5)} = 1 …………….(1)

and
{s/(x – 1) – s/x} = 3……………….(2)

Solving equations (1) and (2) we get s = 36 Km.

(C) SOCIAL SCIENCES

Example
Which one of the following Directive Principles of the State Policy is associated with
the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi ?
1. Equitable distribution of wealth.
2. Establishment of village Panchayats.
3. Participation of lablur in management.
4. Peaceful settlement lof international disputes. Ans.: (2)

Rationale: All the four alternatives in this question are related to different Directive
Principles of the State Policy. Second alternative is the correct answer because it only
matches with the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.
