Civil Engineering and

Infrastructure
SIA-104 Pengantar
Infrastruktur Berkelanjutan

Definition of Infrastructure
• Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures
and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for
the operation of a society or enterprise (Oxford dictionary).
• Infrastructure is the basic systems and services, such as
transport and power supplies that a country or organization
uses in order to work effectively (Cambridge).

Definition of Infrastructure
• Infrastructure is the basic physical systems of a business
or nation; transportation, communication, sewage, water
and electric systems are all examples of infrastructure.
These systems tend to be high-cost investments;
however, they are vital to a country's economic
development and prosperity.

Infrastructure Development
Infrastructure Development involves fundamental
structures that are required for the functioning of a
community and society. This is usually referred to
structures like roads, water supply, sewers, electrical
grids, telecommunications, renewable energy, water
sources identification and boring (wells), purification
systems for clean water, hazard waste management
and so on.

Civil Infrastructure System

• Civil infrastructure systems involves the design, analysis, and

management of infrastructure supporting human activities,
including, for example, electric power, oil and gas, water and
wastewater, communications, transportation, and the collections
of buildings that make up urban and rural communities.
• The civil engineering and infrastructure markets offer very
significant growth prospects, given the rapid development of
urbanization and the difficulties surrounding drinking water
access experienced by a large part of the world’s population,
especially in emerging countries.

Civil Infrastructure System

• The field of civil infrastructure systems builds on
and extends traditional civil engineering areas.
• Rather than focus on individual structural
components or structures, civil infrastructure
systems emphasizes how different structures
behave together as a system that serves a
community's needs.
• Problems in this field typically involve a great deal
of uncertainty, multiple and competing objectives,
and sometimes numerous and conflicting
constituencies.

Civil Infrastructure System

• Civil Infrastructure system are often spatial and
dynamic.
• The technical aspects of infrastructure engineering
must be understood in the social, economic,
political, and cultural context in which they exist,
and must be considered over a long-time horizon
that includes not just design and construction, but
maintenance, operations, performance in natural
disasters and other extreme events, and
destruction as well.

What is the role of civil

engineering in infrastructure
development?

The role of Civil Engineering in

Infrastructure Development
• A civil engineer's jobs is to design, construct and maintain
roads, bridges, airports, tunnels, buildings, dams, water
supply systems ,sewerage systems, hydro-electric projects
and pretty much everything that constitutes infrastructure.
Innovative ideas in the field of infrastructure can be brought
by civil engineer.
• Civil engineers can manage to do the aforementioned
projects related to infrastructural development as the
fundamental idea of less space and more efficiency is
embedded in all civil engineers which is a crucial factor in
development of infrastructure.
• So civil engineers have a very crucial role to play in the
development of infrastructure.

Why is civil engineering important?

• Keeps people safe
– Buildings that don’t collapse
– Water that won’t make you sick
– Transportation systems that minimize hazards
– Environment free of harmful pollutants
• Provides infrastructure that improves
economy and life-style
– Transportation of people and goods
– Productive work spaces (buildings)
– Healthy water to drink and air to breathe

Working in a consulting firm

Perform
engineering for
outside clients

• Solve engineering problems for clients (e.g., design

a bridge)
• Involved with a project from the outset
• Work closely with the client managing the projects
on their behalf
• Involves occasional visits to the site, but largely
office-based.

Civil Engineering Design

Civil design includes the following:

• Earth work
• Traffic design
• Roads and paving
• Retaining walls
• Drainage systems
• Underground piping and conduits
• Site development and landscaping
• Domestic sewage
• Fire fighting
• Geotechnics and embankments for ponds, water reservoirs
etc.

What does a structural engineer do?

Structural Engineering:
Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering?

Architectural Engineering
considers all aspects of
designing buildings

Civil Engineering considers the structural If your career will focus only on buildings,
design of more than buildings: e.g., Architectural Engineering is likely the
buildings, bridges, dams, electrical and better choice. If you career will focus on
communication towers, port facilities, designs other than building, Civil
retaining walls, subways, etc. Engineering is the better choice.
