Class Teach Lesson Plan 1

1. Objectives
a. The students will be able to play #41 Jingle Bells proficiently.
b. NAfME: MU:Pr5.1.Ka- I will apply personal, teacher, and peer feedback to refine
performances of the students
c. NAfME: MU:Pr6.1.3a-The students will be able to perform with expression and technical
accuracy
2. Procedures
a. Begin class with tuning if not already done
i. Have a student play tuning pitches
ii. Have them tune arco style
iii. Do this for each instrument group
b. Start with D major scale
i. Have the students pizzicato scale first once or twice
ii. Switch to arco for scale
1. Here, ask a student to differentiate between arco and pizzicato
iii. Make sure to do ascending and descending
iv. Repeat as necessary, provide feedback
c. Introduce piece #41 Jingle Bells
i. Turn to page 84 in Essential Elements book
1. Make it clear that we are only doing the first page
ii. Have students sing the song
1. Students should be familiar with the popular lyrics, therefore have the
sing said lyrics in time and on pitch
2. Student will keep beats 1 and 3 in their feet while they sing, and they
will also be fingering along while they sing
a. Here, ask a student why its important to keep the beat while
they sing
d. Have students pizzicato the song
i. Do this in chunks (two 4 measure chunks)
1. Very slow tempo at first
ii. I will sing and play the chunks first, and then I will have students respond.
1. Call and response method
iii. Have them pizzicato the entire piece at a solid tempo, with good dynamics, and
stylistically
1. Have them play the first 4 measures piano and the last 4 forte
2. Next, have a student/the class choose what dynamics they’d like
iv. Ensure intonation is correct
1. Provide feedback here
e. Have students play the piece arco
i. Again, do this in 2 chunks of four measures
ii. MAKE SURE THEIR BOWING TECHNIQUES ARE CORRECT
1. Lifting on beat for with rests so that downbeats are being down bowed
iii. Have each section play independently
1. I need to be able to hear each section play their parts proficiently
2. Each section will play separately but they will play each part in sequence
a. Violins play the first two measures immediately followed by
cellos playing next two measure, etc.
iv. Have entire class play in unison
1. Provide positive feedback
2. Fix any mistakes
3. Run as many times as necessary/ time allows
f. Allow students to challenge each other by getting each group to play and “compete”
against each other by section
i. Friendly classroom competition will engage students and have them strive for
better musicianship
3. Assessment
a. I will listen to students play in small groups and as an ensemble to determine the need
for improvement
b. Constant feedback will be provided throughout class as to allow student to mark their
progress in real time
c. Ask students “Do you hear the difference between this and this?” as to refine their
listening skills and to have them track their own progress
