only if the forth point z1 lies on the same circle or the same straight line as the
points z2 , z3 , z4 .
Problem 4. Find a linear-fractional transformation that maps distinct points
z1 , z2 , and z3 of the complex plane onto the points w1 = 0, w2 = 1, w3 = ∞,
respectively.
Solution.
(z − z1 )(z2 − z3 )
w(z) = .
(z − z3 )(z2 − z1 )
Problem 5. Find a linear transformation T (·) such that the function w =
T (z 2 )1/2 , with the principal branch of the square root chosen, maps 0 to 0 and the
hyperbola xy = 1 onto the hyperbola u2 − v 2 = 1.
Solution. Let T (z) = Az + B be the desired linear transformation. Since
T (0) = 0, we must have B = 0. Next, let z = x + iy satisfy xy = 1 and w = u + iv
satisfy u2 − v 2 = 1. Then z 2 = x2 − y 2 + 2xyi can be any point on the line Im z = 2,
and the corresponding w2 = u2 − v 2 + 2uvi is a point on the line Re w = 1. Since
we have w2 = T (z 2 ) = Az 2 , we must have Re A(a + 2i) = 1 for every a ∈ R. Hence,
aRe A − 2Im A = 1 for all a ∈ R. This is possible only for Im A = − 21 , Re A = 0,
i.e., when A = − 2i . We conclude that T (z) = − 2i z.
