PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The objectives of the doctoral program are to prepare scholars to: Conduct high quality research in the field
of economics and disseminate it to scholarly and other audiences; Teach economics research techniques,
inside or outside the classroom; Engage in service and outreach that enhances scholarship and its public
impact; and Excel in a variety of institutional settings, including universities, industry and government
research labs, and think tanks particularly focusing on the economics related fields. There is an intense
awakening that sound economic policies for any country require the services of highly trained economists,
having analytical ability and problem solving skills. It is a well-recognized fact that application of new ideas
and economic theory leads to create new knowledge; one of the main objectives and contribution of
universities for which these institutions are meant for. This program will strategically train up ambassador
learners to build knowledge, skills, competencies and experiences. This program will meet market demands
and also enhance intellectual ability of students.
PROGRAM CONTENTS
THE COURSE WORK
The PhD (Economics) course work will introduce each student to a range of theories and methodologies used
in researching all types of Economics topics. The course work component of PhD (Economics) program
consists of six (6) subjects stretching over two (2) semester. The subject content progress from the broader
aspects of Economics research, to the specific skills required to conduct and deliver a compelling research
design and literature review. For each course work subject, student will be required to attend forty eight (48)
hours of class work in addition to completing a substantial amount of private research for preparation of class
assignments and examinations. To enable progression to the thesis, student must have to maintain
consistently high levels of achievement throughout the course work.
THE THESIS
As per the HEC rules the thesis is scheduled for 2nd & 3rd year of the PhD program. Thesis supervision is
conducted individually and student guidance takes place in the form of supervisory meetings. The aim of the
thesis is to demonstrate that the candidate has made a distinctive and original contribution to the
improvement of theories/professional practice, or policy or strategy in the field of economics. The completed
thesis will be presented for examination and successfully defended according to the University requirements.
The dissertation of program comprises a comprehensive thesis-style research project undertaken by each
student on an individual basis. To facilitate the thesis process, students will be allocated a principal
supervisor, and one or more associate supervisors, with expertise in their nominated discipline. The primary

supervisor will be a permanent faculty member (s) of the Department of Management Sciences, who has
undergone an appropriate research experience and has been approved for supervision by the University.
After the completion of required course work, students will prepare and defend a thesis proposal. If accepted,
students will work on the basis in close consultation with their principal supervisor.
DURATION AND MODE
The PhD program may be completed within a period of three (3) years and maximum period of six (6) years
including one (1) year course work. Each subject of PhD course work involves forty eight (48) hours of face
to face lectures. During lectures, students shall have the opportunity to learn from the faculty member (s) and
also from their peers. Lectures are highly interactive, course and contents are linked directly to the real-world
issues as well as philosophical underpinnings of the process of knowledge production.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The eligibility criteria for PhD Economics program is as follows:
• MS/ M-Phil economics degree (17.5/18 years of education) with consistently good academic record
and minimum of 60% marks in the annual system or CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.00 in the semester system.
• A minimum of 60% marks in the GAT- subject test conducted by the National Testing Service (NTS) or
Candidates must have at least 70% score in university based subject test.
• HEC’s attestation on the candidate’s local degrees (on the back of the original degrees).
• HEC’s equivalency certificate for the candidate’s foreign degrees.

course will familiarize the students with the concepts of Islamic money and capital markets

This course introduces students to the basics of Islamic financial contracts with particular
emphasis on the basis of the Islamic Law of contracts as well as a thorough introduction to
the basic Islamic financial contracts (Mudaraba, Musharaka, Murabaha, Ijara, Salam and
Istisna’). Students will consequently gain insight on the structure and usage of these

Financial Reporting for Islamic Financial Institutions
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the accounting concepts
and principles underlying Islamic Accounting standards as well as the different accounting
and reporting practices in Islamic financial institutions. It also aims to provide students
with an understanding of the corporate governance standards issued by the Islamic
Financial Services Board (IFSB) as well as the Islamic Accounting and Auditing Standards
(IAAS) issued by the Accounting and Auditing Organization of Islamic Financial Institutions
(AAOIFI) and compare them with the International Financial Reporting Standards.
Moreover, students will explore the application of these standards in practice by the
Islamic Financial Institutions and critically examine the role of various organizations such
as AAOIFI and IFSB. In addition it aims to highlight other issues such as Auditing and
governance of Islamic financial Institutions and Sustainability Accounting and reporting in
Islam.

Financial Econometrics
This course introduces basic econometrics with an application to finance. The objective is
to provide theoretical and empirical insights into correlation, standard linear regression
model and its underlying assumptions. After this course, students will have an enhanced
understanding of frequently occurring problems in empirical regression analysis, as well as
the tools to address these problems when analyzing data. Main topics include an
introduction to linear regression, interpreting and comparing regression models,
specification. This course further develops the concepts of econometric models and
statistical techniques used in empirical research, with a focus on their application to

relevant financial issues. It aims to bridge the gap between standard and advanced
econometric techniques for estimation, testing, and forecasting in finance by addressing

probit and discrete choice models, time series, LS and MLE methods, highfrequency data,
modelling volatility, parametric volatility Models, nonparametric volatility models,
