I. THE AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA
1. Brief History :
The Aeronautical Society of India was established in 1948 under the Societies
Registration Act XXI of 1860 with the support and patronage of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru,
who also became the Society's first Patron-in-Chief. The Society was formally
inaugurated by Pandit Nehru at the Puttanna Chetty Town Hall, Bangalore on the 27th of
December 1948.
Over the years, the Society has grown into a major professional body with a large number
of corporate members including all major organization industries in the field of
aeronautics in the country and also some of the world's leading aeronautical industries.
Individual members include eminent Scientists, Pilots; Engineers and Technologists
drawn from all major organizations like the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, DGCA.
DRDO, India Air Force, Indian Airlines, National Aerospace Laboratories, Aeronautical
Developments Agency. Aeronautics Research and Development Board, Airports
Authority of India, Gas Turbine Research Establishment, Aeronautical Development
Establishment, Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited, Indian Space Research Organization,
etc.
The affairs of the society are managed by a Council consisting of President, President-
Elect, Seven Vice-Presidents, Honorary Secretary General, and Honorary Treasurer,
Twelve members elected by the General Body and three members nominated by the
President to represent special interests. Two immediate Past Presidents of the Society, the
Chairman of all branches of the Society and the Editor-Journal of the Society are ex-
officio members of the council. The Council is elected by the members every year at the
Annual General Meeting of the Society.
3. Objectives:
The objectives of the Society are to promote the advancement and diffusion of the
knowledge of the aeronautical sciences and aircraft engineering and the elevation of
aeronautical profession.
4. Activities :
i) The society provides a platform to professionals in the field of aeronautics to meet
and discuss issues of mutual interest.
iii) The Society publishes a quarterly journal devoted to research and technical papers
on various facets of aeronautical sciences.
vi) The Society conducts examination in aeronautical engineering twice every year.
About 40 to 50 candidates graduate every semester.
vii) The Society provides library facilities at Delhi for Delhi based student-members.
A good number of Branches of the Society have also established library facilities for
local students. Student-members are advised to ascertain further details from the
respective Branch offices.
viii) The Society also provides multimedia and video based learning facilities at its
Headquarters.
x) The Society organizes On Job Training for those who have successfully
completed Section-A and Section-B examinations. Of these, merit students are also
provided financial stipend of Rs3000.00 pm for period up to one year.
Certified that a pass in the Associate Membership Examination Part II and III/.Section A
& B of the Aeronautical Society of India has been recognized at par with a Bachelor's
degree in Aeronautical Engineering from an Indian University for purposes of
recruitment to superior posts and services under the Central Government.

Candidates are eligible to appear in GATE for Post-Graduates studies at some of the IITs
after successfully completing Section-A and Section-B. Some of other Universities and
educational institutions have also recognized this examination for higher studies, and
students are advised to confirm such details from the respective institutions directly.
The Engineering Council, London has recognized our examination and those who have
completed Section A & B of the Society examination shall be granted direct entry into
Part 2 of their examination.

Kindly refer to this Department's letter of even number dated 16.11.2004 on the
subject noted above.
On the recommendation of the AICTE, the High Level Committee of this Ministry in
its meeting held on 17.09.2004 approved the revised syllabus for implementation. The
Approval for implementing the revised syllabus is subject to all other conditions of
recognitions mentioned in our earlier letter, remaining same.

The Governing Council of Aeronautical Society has authorized conduct of the Associate
membership examination with new updated Syllabus from June 2006 exam-session. As
per the Rules, all student-members registered on or after 01 Aug 05 will be evaluated
as per the now updated syllabus. Student-members enrolled/registered prior to 01Aug05
will be free to pursue studies and continue appearing in the examination with the current
unmodified syllabus, however they are advised and welcome to change over to the now
modified syllabus at the earliest. The Associate membership examination of Section-A
with current unmodified syllabus will be conducted uptoDec07 session only and will be
closed there after. The Section-B exam with current unmodified syllabus will continue
for some time and further details will be published separately.
Like the current unmodified syllabus, the modified syllabus also has two parts, called,
Section-A and Section-B. Brief details of the two Sections are placed below. (For full
details please refer to the Syllabus)
Section-A
There are ten compulsory subjects in this Section and also there is a practical capsule of
six weeks duration on workshop practices. The compulsory ten subjects are:
A candidate who has passed Intermediate or 10+2 or Higher Secondary Examination (12
years course) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 50% or more marks in each :
or who had passed the Studentship Examination of the Society up to June 98 session
after which examination was stopped, can appear in Section A . Candidates who have
passed B. Sc. (Physics, Chemistry & Maths) with a minimum aggregate of 50% in each
of the three subjects over the three year period or Diploma in Engineering (3 years
course) with 50% marks in aggregate over the three year period or AME are also eligible
to appear in Section A. Airmen of Indian Air Force in any of the following trades under
X category are also eligible to appear in Section A.
The following - categories of Air Technical personnel of the Indian Navy are also eligible
to appear in Section A. Aircraft Artificer. Electrical Artificer (Air), Electrical Artificer
(Air Radio), Aircraft Artificer (Weapons), all 5th Class and Leading Air Mechanics,
Leading Electrical Mechanics (Air Radio), Leading Electrical Mechanics (Air) and
Leading Air Ordnance Mechanics.
Section-B
The Section-B has four different streams to choose from, and each stream has nine
compulsory subjects and one elective subject, making a total of ten subjects in each
stream. The four streams are titled Aero-mechanical; Avionics; Maintenance &
Production(Electrical); and, Maintenance & Production (Mechanical) streams. A
candidate can select either of the four streams at one time while pursuing Section-B. Each
stream has ten theoretical subjects and two practical training capsules each of six weeks
duration.
Eligibility for appearing in the Section-B
Candidates who have successfully completed Section-A subjects and the six week
training capsule on workshop practices are eligible to appear in the Section-B.
7. Registration :
(iii) A bank DD for the applicable fee plus postage charges for sending
Registration Card, I-Card, Rules & Regulations Book and allied documents with
Syllabus. (As on 01Aug 05, the applicable fee is Rs1500.00 and postal charges are
Rs100.00)
g) Registration Number shall be allotted to every candidate who has been accepted
as a Student Member. Depending upon his/her educational qualifications, he/she shall be
permitted to appear in Section A.
h) The society reserves the right to reject an application for Registration without
assigning any reason.
8. Examination Centers :
The Examination is held twice a year in June/December at the following eleven centres,
namely : BANGALORE, CHENNAI, DELHI, HYDERABAD, INDORE, KANPUR,
KHARAGPUR, MUMBAI, PUNE, ROORKEE and THIRUVANANTHAPURAM.
A candidate may select the centre of his choice. Change of examination centre can be
permitted provided a request for the same is received with payable fee, four weeks before
the start of the examination. As on 01Aug05 the payable fee is Rs. 200/-.
Application Form for the examination can be had on request, free of charge, by
candidates already registered with the Society by sending a self-addressed (9"X4")
envelope stamped for Rs. 10/- quoting their registration number. A candidate should
submit a fresh application form, for every session.
The completed exam application form should be sent not earlier than 15th February for
June and 15th August for December session examinations. The last date of receipt of
Examination Application Forms, without late fee is 10th April/10th October and with late
fee is 25th April /25th October for June and December session examination, respectively.
ii) A candidate will have to apply for at least four exam sessions during Section-A
and at least four exam sessions in Section-B. In each such session, a candidate is allowed
to take a minimum of one and maximum of four subjects of his choice of Section-A or
Section-B as applicable.
iii) The marks allotted to each subject are 100. Pass marks in each subject are 50. A
candidate who secures a pass in any subject is not to re-appear in that subject. However a
candidate is permitted to improve his performance, but for this prior permission from the
HO is essential. It may also be noted that in such endeavors, the pass score in the subject
will be removed and marks obtained in the final attempt will be taken into consideration.
iv) Result is normally declared in the 2nd/3rd week of following August/February for
the examinations conducted in June/December, respectively. The results are placed on
website www.aesi.org
vi) Consolidated Mark Sheet & Provisional Certificate can be obtained immediately
after successfully completing Sectiob-B. Such successful candidates must submit request
along with bank DD in r/o arrears of dues, if any, and four stamp size photographs.
Completion certificate will be handed over to candidates during Business Session of the
Society's AGM, usually held in Dec or Jan every year.
vii) A candidate may apply for recounting of marks of the immediate past session on
payment of Rs. 100/- per subject to ascertain whether all answers have been marked and
the marks awarded have been added correctly. Revaluation of answer books shall be
undertaken only if all attempted questions in the answer book have not been evaluated by
the examiner. This option is available only till the conduct of the next session
examination.
viii) Detailed instructions are available in the book titled Rules & Regulations of the
Examination, a copy handed over at the time of registration to every candidate.
ix) For any additional information. Candidates should send a 9" X 4" self addressed
and stamped envelope (for Rs. 5/-) for prompt reply. For reply to be sent by registered
post, the envelope may be stamped appropriately.
x) There is a maximum time limit for completing Section A & B exam of 8 years
from the date of registration. The candidates registered prior to 14th October, 1998 are
permitted to complete Section A & B up to October 2006.
xi) Candidates may appear in any additional stream after completing Section-B in
one of the streams only after obtaining prior permission.
The Society is aware that some private institutions/colleges and few other professional
bodies are conducting coaching classes for candidates taking the Associate Membership
Examination of the Society. The Society has a policy not to accord affiliation or
recognition to any such coaching institution/college. Candidates are expected to take
necessary precautions against likely disputes with such institutions.
The Society has Library facilities at Delhi and some of the branches which cater to needs
of only local students & members.
An Identity Card will be issued initially at the time of registration. Students should send
two recent passport/stamp size photographs along with a self addressed envelope stamped
for Rs. 22/- towards sending Identity Card by Registered Post, in case they are applying
separately. Initially the IC will be issued with validity for a period of five years.

Annual subscription for five years
@Rs.100.00 per year : Rs 500.00
Postal charges : Rs.100.00
o This fee becomes due on 01st April every year and shall be valid for exam
sessions in following June and December of the year.
d) Special fee for use of library at AeSI HeadOffice NewDelhi and at Branches (By
all student members)
Note :- Postage/Courier charges of Rs. 50.00/Rs. 100.00 or US$ 20.00 would be extra
and payable along with request for any of the transactions at (c) above.
Question papers for the previous sessions in each subject are available on payment of a
token fee of Rs. 10/- per question paper. The candidates should submit self addressed
envelope (suitably stamped) and Demand Draft while making a request.
All payments to the society should be made only by a crossed Demand Draft/Banker's
Cheque. All payments should be in favour of "The Aeronautical Society of India"
payable at New Delhi. Payment by Money Order, M.T., Cheque, Postal Order or cash is
not acceptable.
With effect from Ist January 1994, candidates who have completed section A & B and
have paid the first and second instalments of Life Composite Fee shall be automatically
elected as Graduate Members of the Society. For this, after issue of Consolidated
Marksheet and Provisional Certificate, Graduate Membership will be approved by the
Grading Committee of the Society. The candidates will be forwarded necessary papers
for their signatures and return of those papers for issue of Graduate Life Membership
Cards.
i) Shri R. Venkataraman Prize is awarded for the best overall performance in the
Associate Membership Examination during the year. The Prize amount is Rs. 3000/-.
ii) Society's Prize is awarded for the second best overall performance among
students in this Examination during the year . The prize amount is Rs. 2500/-.
iii) Indian Air Force welfare Prize of Rs. 1500/- is awarded for the best performance
by an Indian Air Force personnel (including retired) during the year in this examination.
iv) Dr. Abdul Kalam Prize is Rs. 3000/-. It is shared by students who score highest
marks in any subject of Section B in June & December session, each year.
v) Mrs. Kiran Kant Prize is awarded for best performance by a female candidate
during the year in the examination. The prize amount is Rs. 2500/-.
ii) The Society's graduates are eligible to compete in the Graduate Aptitude
Test in Engineering (GATE) for admission to IITs etc. for higher studies.
iii) Some of the Universities in India and abroad admit our students for higher
studies.
