YOUR AUDITION
What We Are Looking For
The most important elements we are looking for in
those that audition are instrumental proficiency,
body control, approach to learning, and desire to
perform.
Having a strong fundamental understanding of
technique, vocabulary and rhythmic accuracy on
your instrument cannot be understated. It is NOT
essential you know the RCC technique to audition.
You should use whatever technique you feel most
comfortable with. If you know the RCC technique, it
is to your advantage, but is not required.
Due to the physical requirements of our shows it is
important for you to commit to a healthy lifestyle,
and to display strong body alignment, coordination,
balance and stamina.
Having a positive attitude is vital. You should be a
good student with the ability to receive, react and
respond to information. Your ability to work well in
a team environment and to represent the values
of our organization carries equal weight to your
current skill level.
Most importantly, we are looking for performers.
Having a strong desire to perform for a live
audience, as well as the ability to communicate
the expressive qualities of the show is an absolute
necessity.

What You Can Expect
The audition will take consist of various phases that
are designed to test all of the elements that we are
looking for.
• Sectionals, reviewing fundamental approach to
technique, vocabulary, and rhythmic accuracy.
• Marching basics, covering various step sizes,
tempos and metric conversions
• Movement block, learning basic choreography to
test coordination, balance and receptiveness to
our performance style.
• Battery ensemble, learning a battery ensemble
piece set to drill (handed out the first day of
auditions) to test ensemble awareness and form
control.
• Interview, to discuss your ability to commit to
the time and financial requirements of being a
member of RCC.
• Audition ending performance, showcasing your
performance quality on the sectional, movement
and battery ensemble pieces.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What should I bring?
A: All you need to bring is your own sticks or mallets, the
audition music, athletic attire, and a great attitude. All
instruments will be provided by RCC.

Q: Can I audition even if I have no intention of marching?

A: YES! Many people each year audition just for the experi-
ence. The more you do one-on-one auditions, the more
comfortable you will get.

Q: I have heard you need previous drum corps or indoor

experience to be accepted, true?
A: N
 O! We have members each year in ALL sections with no
previous drum corps and indoor experience. Does it help?
Yes. Is it required? No.

Q: Do I need to be a student at Riverside City College to

attend the audition?
A: No. You do not need to be a current student at RCC, but
we do ask our members to enroll in a 1-unit class during
our season. This allows us to use the facilities that have
been provided to us by the college.

Q: What are your age requirements?

A: We do not have a minimum age requirement, but we do
have a maximum age requirement. You cannot be older
than 22 unless you turn 23 on or after April 1st of that
competitive year.

Q: What is the rehearsal schedule like?

A: The ensembles starts rehearsing every other Sunday in
the months of September & October, every Sunday in
November, and then every Friday, Saturday and Sunday
December – April (With the exception of 1 free weekend
in December, January and February, which coincides with
the Blue Devils audition and camp schedule.)
